541764 2007-04-17 09:55:00 Hi,

Ive got this silly issue which is bugging me and draining valuable time! Pc is taking way too long to boot and majority of the time, only the task bar shows with a couple of icons for Norton loaded. After that nothing loads. No desktop items are loaded (desktop short cuts for example).

I have tried to repair XP and that hasnt resolved the issue. I have also tried to re-install SP2 as well. That didnt help either.

Booting into safe mode has no problems, desktop items load easily too. I dont believe this is a case of virus. Machine works and I do perform scans regularly. This started happening after I cleaned out the PC for dust and put things back in place.

I have also checked device manager, no missing or faulty drivers there either.

Any ideas/suggestions welcome.

541765 2007-04-17 09:59:00 Have you tried checking with msconfig to see if there are unnecessary processes that starts up when you log in?

If not, go to start-run-type in msconfig-enter. A window will come up. Click at the start up tab, then untick all the things unnecessary as you log in.

Or when you cleaned everything in the case, did you put the heatsink and fan of the CPU correctly? If not, overheating may be the culprit and your CPU is automatically slowed down to reduce heat.

Hope that helps.

541766 2007-04-17 10:01:00 How much ram is installed?

I would check and see whats running on startup .

Or is it taking to long to get to the welcome screen?

541767 2007-04-17 10:02:00 Personally, I think your main problem is Norton.

I used to have a slow start up too - then removed Norton security 05 and it started up extremely fast therefore after.

ZoneAlarm and AVG are good, free firewalls and anti viruses. And don't hog anywhere near the amount of space as Norton.

541768 2007-04-17 10:11:00 Heating may well be the case, but as far as i can see the fan on top of cpu chip is going, assuming ive put it the right way up? (Not sure how to tell) . .

I have used MSconfig to untick unwanted items, except Norton for the moment .

Ive got 1024MB ram . Does show up during start up .

Previously I notcied that "Microsoft System Management Bios Driver" was showing up under device manager as a faulty driver, so I un-installed it . Then re-installed SP2 . Not sure what the implications of this are . . . Might even be too late . lol

Thanks guys .

541769 2007-04-17 22:28:00 Umm, check control panel / admin tools /services .

See if there's an entry in services called "MSMBIOS"

It may belong to a password stealing trojan/rootkit .

As stated here ( . sophos . com/virusinfo/analyses/w32tilebotai . html" target="_blank">www . sophos . com)

Look under advanced .

541770 2007-04-18 00:44:00 I decided enough is enough and formatted drive and re-installed XP Pro . Now it is able to boot but PC performance shows as 100% . Not sure what is causing this!

Also I am not sure whether I have mounted the cpu fan the correct way . Is it supposed to take hot air out of the heatsink or is it supposed to suck air and provide air for heatsink? I am confused . Please help .

541771 2007-04-18 00:55:00 What kind of CPU is it??

CPU fans can only go on one way, (obviously u cant put it upside down it wont lock, or fit).

As most of them lock into the retaining lock thing on the mobo.

If Nortons is still installed, kill it and get something better.

I take it, u did a clean install, not install XP over what was installed already?

541772 2007-04-18 01:01:00 AMD Athalon 2Ghz running on Asus A7N266-VM SE MOBO. Still got my 1024MB ram there as well.

I would uninstall Nortons, its most probably way out of date . And most probably the cause of the slowness .

And get AVG free ( . grisoft . com/freeweb . php/doc/2/" target="_blank">free . grisoft . com)

Or Avast Home ( . avast . com/eng/avast_4_home . html" target="_blank">www . avast . com)

If u want a free AV program .

And install Comodo (http://www . personalfirewall . comodo . com/) for the firewall .
