541477 2007-04-16 10:07:00 I have noticed that the c1com.co.nz website, they are doing something strange with their prices. On the homepage, they advertise a single price for a product. However when you click on the product, it then displays two prices, one in large print, and then another below it, which the visa and mastercard symbol next to it, which costs more more. I am assuming that larger price is the cash / direct credit price, and the one below it is the price if you pay by credit card.
However isn't this forbidden by credit card companies. I thought credit card companies did not allow business to charge more if their customers choose to pay by credit card? I thought they could instead offer a discount for cash, but they weren't allowed to do it the other way around.

541478 2007-04-16 10:17:00 c1 could argue that that's what they are doing. They are offering a discount for cash and bank transfer, which is shown in the big text, and the normal price which you pay if you use credit card is shown below.

That's my take on it anyway. They try to be tricky in the way they show prices these days.

Where as places like ascent price the old way, showing the normal price and then if you select to pay by cash or bank transferr they then show you the discounted price

Yes, but I think credit card companies are very strict on the way companies are allowed to advertise prices, if they allow credit card payments. From memory, I think that the full price they advertise, which would be the price on the homepage, has to be the price you would get teh product for if you paid by credit card, then they can offer a discount off this price for cash/cheque, eftpos etc.
I remember Pac and Slave got in trouble a few years ago, becuase they were doing something very similar with their pricing, by charging more on the main price when a customer paid by credit card.

I have found c1com and ascent to be good, although I have heard a couple of bad stories about c1com regarding warrenty returns. I think ascent are doing it the way credit card companies permit it to be done.

541480 2007-04-16 10:45:00 C1com advertise the second price being item price + 1.5% "Credit Card Surcharge" so I don't think they could argue the pricing scheme. sal (67)

Yes, but I don't think credit card companies allow businesses to charge a 'credit card' surcharge. They only allow businesses to offer a discount if paying by cash/eftpos etc. Pak n Slave were making people pay a credit card surcharge, and the credit card company suspended their ability to process credit cards for a while.

True.

Good luck making Visa or C1 care.

I think they will care as I have emailed their processor to inform them. Hopefully they will remove this surcharge. I think they are partly doing it, so that their prices look lower in pricespy.
