| 541488 | 2007-04-16 10:05:00 | I purchased Vista Home Premium for my newish "Vista capable" labeled HP notebook. I went online and got all the updated drivers that were available then.... ...it installed OK - and ran most things OK - it looked pretty - seemed to run Programs fast enough - looked pretty again..... got terribly confused trying to change the default settings and ended up with about 5 "My Documents folders. Has anyone tried downloading photos off a camera... a real abortion of a method. Ended up using Picasa for this. Tried it out for 7 weeks then, last night, using my Acronis backup, I replaced it with XP. Happiness reigns again. It seems quite a good operating system, but, take away the pretty bits and there is not a lot of difference to XP. Some things are pretty darned awkward though. Age is creeping up on me and I guess I am getting to old to learn new things but I found XP is far easier to use than Vista. I will now wait till Vista SP1 comes out, then may look again.. but then... maybe not. Ken :2cents: |

| 541490 | 2007-04-16 19:33:00 | There is always a service pack!!! I am just using that as a milestone to maybe look again . Nvidia may have a driver out for my card by then so I can do simple things like changing contrast and brightness . Can't do it yet on Vista as I am forced to use the Vista Generic driver . I will probably return to Vista . I have been a user since my son's first computer, a ZX81, and have seen the whole gamut of OS's come through and been an early adopter of each one . Including Vista! Perhaps it is just that I can't be bothered with the hassles of new things anymore . XP does everthing that I want and I am happy using it a while longer . Not everyone likes the same thing Big John . Would take the fun out of dinosaur racing (Holden v Ford) wouldn't it . Ken . |

| 541494 | 2007-04-17 02:05:00 | I tried Vista Ultimate for a month before going back... I held on as long as I could but until there's some decent video card drivers then my (primarily) gaming PC will remain on XP. Company of Heroes will run on max settings fine on XP... same profile on Vista? No way, had to change to low/medium. No thank you... (Athlon 64 3500+, 7800GTX 256Mb) No support for my Live! 5.1 either, what the heck, apprently it's because Vista didn't like the way it's gameport talks to the mainboard (!) But you're right, it looks pretty - the DreamScene desktop playing 768HD content as my wallpaper 24/7 is what I miss most about rolling back :P |

I would have thought the onboard sound on any AMD64 motherboard would walk all over a Live! 5.1? They were alright back in the day cause they offer cheap 5.1 but they really are a relic today. |

If and when I get a new computer I will install my XP Pro Windows . . . . . My tech said in his opinion they have a lot more work to do with Vista . He worked for 2 years through Microsoft on Vista, when It was finally released he installed the released version which was free to him due to his work . Half of his programs did not work, or at least he had many problems, so he took it off and went back to XP . . . . |
