542108 2007-04-19 04:22:00 Good news, I used HiJackThis and got rid of those features you specified . Also, I used Trojan Remover and got rid of the msasvc . exe file (as well as some other useless things) and now the data packets are have returned to normal .

Good!

I didn't end up using safe mode to do any of this, does that matter?

I would still check later to see if msasvc . exe file is still there, and if it is, delete it anyway .

I also didn't select the 3rd to 7th option in Trojan Remover, as I am not sure I need to . Resetting internet preferences? I'm not so sure . . . I'll let you know if I encounter any more problems .

It only sets the homepage to blank . And the reset host file removes any entry that something may have put in it .

And the 5th to 7th option removes entries that worm (or other malware), may have put in the registry . . . . . Which I'm pretty sure it does put entries in the registry .

So choosing those utilities won't affect my preferences?

No, it only removes entries that malware/trojans etc may have put in the registry, so they could do damage.

The reset IE option only resets the homepage, just go into internet options and put whatever the site was back in.

Okay, I've chosen options 3-7 in the utilities menu . A few of them said no action was taken, which I suppose is good .

While we're on the topic of Internet Options, whenever I try and access Tools > Internet Options in IE, it comes up with a restrictions message, saying "please contact your system admininstrator" . This is odd, because I am the admin! It's my computer, I should have complete control . What can I do to fix this?

Thats a good sign, it just means nothing put anything in the registry etc .

Microsoft disagrees.

Another thing as you have wireless you should have security on that too or passers by can help themselves to it.
