541784 2007-04-19 23:21:00 Thanks for that drspy.

Ive still got PC usage at 100% I believe that after I installed SP2, there is bad memory management going on. CPU shows as 100% usage but I don't necessarily notice any drag/slowness.

I am thinking of:
1. Formatting (again!)
2. Install XP pro
3. Before installing any base drivers, boot into safe mode and install SP2
4. Then install drivers on normal mode after installing Sp2..

I cant believe how stupid I was in breaking the golden rule of 'If it aint broke dont fix it'

Any ideas/suggestions welcome.

541785 2007-04-20 02:21:00 I take it, u did a clean install, not install XP over what was installed already?

Did you do a complete clean install (over a re-format)?

541786 2007-04-20 02:33:00 you said 'cpu shows 100% USAGE'........but my question is WHAT EXACTLY process is showing that usage........if it really was 100% you'd be experienceing very very very slow performance belive me

so what in taskmanager/processes is showing all the cpu time ?......

541787 2007-04-20 03:58:00 I have just re-installed XP PRO after formatting again.

Before booting into normal mode straight after install, I logged into Safe mode and updated to SP2. Then I installed necessary drivers.

As per image below, straight after logging into either safe mode or normal mode usage us shown as 100%. (Only after installing SP2). Commit charge 163M/2392M. Will modify post to include screen dump of task manager for further info.

541788 2007-04-20 04:36:00 There's no need to install SP2 in safe mode.

It'll install fine in Normal windows.

Have u installed the rest of the updates after SP2, so XP is up to date?

541789 2007-04-20 04:43:00 No,
I havn't installed updates after SP2. I am quite used to running with just Sp2. Might not be the best idea...
Just curious as to what could cause cpu usage of 100% even though Pc seems to be running fine...
evofreak (11327)
541790 2007-04-20 04:45:00 Well, there u go then. Some updates may fix high CPU usage.

BUT, if u cant be bothered updating and keeping up to date.

You've only got yourself to blame, if u get hit by a vulnerability / unpatched XP.

And you SHOULD install the mobo drivers before anything else, including SP2.

541791 2007-04-20 06:56:00 I remember there used to be a virus which used 100% cpu but didn't allow you to open the little CTRL + ALT + DEL box thingy. Could be a virus of types maybe? --Wolf-- (128)
541792 2007-04-20 21:53:00 it'd be unlikely to be a virus on a clean install.........I'd suggest you run a harddrive diagnostic also theres a possibility that it's the mobo i've seen both cause this problem at times also...... drcspy (146)
541793 2007-04-23 06:49:00 Now resolved. Not sure what resolved it. I found a disc which had xp pro with sp2 on it. Installed that and CPU usage still showed as 100% installed drivers/programs as per normal and after a few reboots, seemed to be back to normal. Looks like its okay now (CPU usage is not 100 at all times now).

While trying to fix this PC, screwed up the other PC by pulling out the little battery which is needed. So now I got to fix "unmountable_boot_volume" on the other one. Might simply back up data and re-install xp pro on it.
