543176 2007-04-21 15:10:00 Just wandering if a faster modem would make any difference to internet surfing/downloading?

Like a Gigabit Ethernet adsl 2 modem with a firewall connected to a gigabit port on a motherboard?:)

Or do you have to get a faster ISP or ISP plan as well?

What adsl modem do you use?

And what modem would you recommend for under $300.

Are there any free things you can do for better speed?

Cheers for any input.

the adsl modem doesn't really determine the speed of your connection....

543178 2007-04-21 20:48:00 You want fast broadband Internet? Don't stay in NZ - we are one of those 3rd World countries, as far as Broadband Internet is concerned!

If you want to enjoy the fresh air here, bear with the slow 'unleashed' Internet as it is. You can't have the best of everything in life, anyway.

543179 2007-04-21 21:11:00 Gigabit Ethernet is just for LANs / networks, if its on the mobo. Not for the net.

And since NZ arent on ADSL 2, u wont get ADSL 2 speed.

Even if u have a ADSL 2 modem.

Until Telescum activate it

No it won't.
However. I had an old Speedtouch Ethernet one wich when Telecom went "full speed" would report the max line speed as being 6000 odd.

I bought a Dlink 502 off Trademe and while nothing improved as far as my actual speed went, it reports max line speed as 8000 odd now.

1) probably not, but if you are on the edge of reason (aka 1.5km from telescum) it may, bad old tech = bad old performance.
2)Yes...?
3)Yes for sure... you have to PAY!
4) DSL-604T (not telescum)
5)DSL-604T (or its replacement)
6) PLENTY!!! buy APC April 2007 and read up on www.unblocka.com for a start.

Good luck

543182 2007-04-22 11:21:00 I'd get TCPoptimiser from www.speedguide.net

It took my download speed went from 2000kb/s to 3600kb/s

543183 2007-04-22 13:02:00 Port-forwarding can make a difference for the likes of torrents, as-can decent modems. If you have the DSL-302g, then it'll possibly fall-over if you over-burden it with torrents etc.
Faster speeds? Generally, no, the limit is the line / connection speed.

Was just looking at Canadian ISPs for a workmate moving over there. $29.99 for unlimited 5mbps down, 800kbps upload! :O

1.5km is edge of reson now? I'm 4.5km from the exchange and Speedtest.net shows me getting 3.4mbps max, and as low as 1.8-2mbps onpeak.

Possibly because I'm rural?

Wow. Lucky you.

I'm 400 metres from mine and get and average of 600k.

I'd stop complaining if I were you.
