542956 2007-04-21 09:36:00 Hi guys,

I'm looking to upgrade from my very old and large PC Company computer which runs Windows 98 and Office 2000 to something fast and portable that doesn't crash all the time! Reading the forums, ASUS sounds like a good brand, so I'll probably go for that, but would appreciate any other suggestions. I don't need anything too flash - might instal Photoshop or similar, but that's about it as far as extras go. Does anyone have an opinion on Windows Vista vs Windows XP? Ideally, I'd like to be able to transfer some old Outlook emails and other files from the old clunker to the new computer, but I don't think I can do that with Vista. Does anyone know if I can transfer emails from Outlook 2000 to whatever Windows XP uses? And how? My current computer doesn't have anything nifty like a USB portal, or even a CD/DVD drive that works!

Also, can anyone recommend a good, reliable computer store in Auckland? Somewhere where they'll give honest advice and good after-sale service? I had a bad experience with a chain-store-that-shall-remain-nameless last week, who sold me a notebook that had already been used and returned!

Any advice appreciated! Thanks!

542957 2007-04-21 10:08:00 PBtech in penrose, had to go back once for some repairs and was fast and efficient and they helped me choose specs that suited my needs (and my budget:D) beeswax34 (63)
542958 2007-04-21 10:18:00 As far as I know, Windows Mail can import mails/contacts from any previous builds of Outlook Express. I just transferred mum's mails from an old computer, which was running with OE5.....

As for Vista - I'd recommend XP still if you don't know too much stuff about OS. But as far as I have used Vista now, I'm very happy with it.

542959 2007-04-21 10:22:00 Personally I would buy a laptop with XP and wold forget about Vista.

And if you are going to install Photoshop then make sure you get at least 1GB ram.

Other than that just about anything new out there today will suffice.

542960 2007-04-21 11:30:00 I agree with above comments: WinXP, 1 Gb RAM, PB Tech in Penrose, ASUS, and be sure you are happy with the warranty - read the fine print.

Before you go to PBTech, shop around using Price Spy or whatever online method. Know the competitor's prices. If PBTech is not the best, show them a printed page of a better deal and ask them to match it or at least give you a free case.

Almost forgot: say you do NOT want Norton's antivirus installed, or any other Norton program.

Adobe CS3 comes as a suite of Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign in either standard or premium edition which is currently only available for Mac OS with the Vista version due out towards the end of the year. If you can get Adobe CS2 suite it will run easily on Win XP with 1GB of RAM. The price for Adobe CS3 standard is about $2400 for Mac unless your a student.

As for good places to get advice... get it here for free or pick a computer sales store.

542962 2007-04-21 12:03:00 I would go for:
1. XP Pro,
2. 2gb ram,
3. Intel Core 2 Duo LGA 775 CPU .

That would be a fast laptop,(for now that is.:D ).

Make sure you get a carry case thrown in with the laptop as well and a mouse and a spare battery.

Do you want to get portable speakers as well?

And a good warranty of course.

A good trick to do is to shop around and pick up quotes/pamphlets etc. and put shop against shop to get the best deal.-They want your hard earned money, so get them to work for you the customer!!

542964 2007-04-22 09:01:00 Wow – I just logged back in – thanks for all the great advice! Just a few more questions:

What’s wrong with Norton? Is there another antivirus program that’s better? Also, what sort of things should I be looking for in a warranty?

What's your budget btw?

Around $2000, give or take a bit.

Cheers!

It's bloated.
You could try something like AVG Free for your antivirus, Ad Aware (also free) for your adware and spybot (Free) for your spyware.

NOD32 is also a good antivirus software and don't forget a good firewall application.

There are a number of other good free antivirus and spyware/adware apps used by posters on PF1, the ones I have listed are the ones that I run on Win XP Pro SP2 (running on Parallels)

There are a lot of good laptops out there for around $2000.
