542370 2007-04-19 08:35:00 On a podcast I listen to it was said that the best way to defrag an iPod was to wipe it clean and then reload, which makes sense.

For some reason I mentioned this to Mrs Misty, who for once did not roll her eyes and fall asleep at the mention of something IT/elecronic related. She said that it would probably make sense to defrag the hard drive(s) - as well - before reloading the iPod. This seems to make sense !! frightening obvious ??

Any comments ??

542371 2007-04-19 08:40:00 Well u can either format it, (in My computer, like a floppy), reset it, (in Itunes).

Only thing is with some Ipods, if u reset it, you need the power charger to bring it back to life, (and you need Itunes, to redownload the firmware for it), before u put whatever back on it.

Then if u use Itunes, resync whatever back to an Ipod.

542372 2007-04-19 08:41:00 I would have thought that simply deleting the contents (podcasts) on your iPod was sufficient. I have never defragged either of mine. I wasn't aware that you could. Isn't that more of a Windows OS thing? I think reformatting or resetting it as Speedy says would be the way to go. Isn't defragging more for cleaning up the messy bits on your hard drive? winmacguy (3367)
542373 2007-04-19 08:46:00 Yup, I dont really defrag these, well I havent really used them either.

I usually use these for contacts, a few songs, and for the calendar.

Think I might put something like Rockbox on one of them and see what its like.

What they were saying is that even individual tunes could get fragmented, therefore there had to be searching on the disc which could take more time - but even more important, put an extra load on the hard disc.

guess I don't use my iPod enough to have noticed although I am about to reformat mine from PC to Mac since I have moved all of my songs over.

542378 2007-04-19 11:12:00 Dw, Rockbox is so incredibly simple to install and use. I love the 80's games that you can put onto your MP3player. Its really great:D beeswax34 (63)
542379 2007-04-20 07:53:00 Does the Ipod have a defragment option in it's menus anywhere? My Creative has an option (Under setting from memory) where the player will defrag it's self with out a computers assistance, and it does it with out wiping the songs, it does the same as windows defrag where it rearranges the files.
