542976 2007-04-23 11:12:00 Thanks for the photoshop advice - I don't have anything installed at the moment - guess I'll have to look into how expensive it'll be. I'll try and get someone to give me a demo of Windows Vista, so I can check out it's features. Although the guy in the chain-store-that-shall-remain-nameless did show me its new and improved alt-tab feature!

Newbie's a she, by the way ;)

Adobe Creative Suite 3 Standard Edition which has all 3 apps in (Photoshop/InDesign/Illustrator) it goes for approximately $2400 for Mac OS X only with the Windows Vista version coming out at the end of the year. However if you can get hold of a copy of Adobe CS2 it will run on XP and should be around $1700 or maybe a bit less. It is not Vista compatible so it would depend on if you wanted to wait and save up a bit more cash towards the end of the year....

If you just want to buy Photoshop by itself you would need to get a copy of Photoshop 7 which was the last version of Photoshop to be sold separately back in 2003.

542977 2007-04-23 16:42:00 And the old versions of photoshop (e.g. 6 and 7) are still very powerful apps, CS and CS2 are just more advanced, but probably not needed unless they have specific features you want.

I use Photoshop 6 and GIMP 2.2.9 here, and so far I haven't found anything I can't do (although plug-ins are needed for some features in PS6)

542978 2007-04-26 11:27:00 Only catch with going for Vista is that Photoshop won't run on it till Adobe brings out CS3 for Windows at the end of the year, however all the current versions of Photoshop will run on XP which was specified in the first post.

Photoshop CS3 is available now for Windows

542979 2007-04-26 12:00:00 I noticed earlier in the week that Photoshop for Mac was immediately available for sale as a stand alone product which surprised me since I understood that Adobe was only selling the CS3 range as a bundled suite. It is good to see that the Windows version is also now available. I assume it is available for Vista?
It may be awhile before it starts to arrive in the country in sufficient numbers.

Looks like it will run on both XP and Vista.

542980 2007-04-26 12:27:00 Yes, CS3 (for Windows) was designed to run on Vista. suethomo (4694)

Thanks, I was always aware that it was designed for Vista, I didn't realise that Adobe was going to make it compatible with both XP and Vista.

542982 2007-04-26 22:37:00 Hey, One notebook I would recommend is the ASUS F3T, Not the Newest core @ Duo. but has the go7600 series video card which tends to be the real Bottle neck with most mobile systems. Comes with 1024 Ram and a 120Gig Hard Drive. Dick Smith Sell these for around $2200 with Vista Business, But you can also pick it up from PB Tech for the same price or even a little cheaper. (plus Free bag and mouse)

I would recommend ASUS as they have a 2 year warranty and a 1 year warranty on the battery which is above average.

Everyone here keeps telling you that Photoshop CS2 won't run with Vista but it will, it doesnt always run perfectly (is a fwe known bugs) and the biggest problem is actually with Acrobat 7, So this isnt really a problem unless you want photoshop cs2 just for Acrobat. The price for CS2 is around $1400 retail, and Student Version is cheaper if your eligible.
For complete compatibilty it will be better to wait for CS3 though, or use another package.

Hope this helps.
