| 542966 | 2007-04-22 10:00:00 | Whats wrong with Norton? Is there another antivirus program thats better? Also, what sort of things should I be looking for in a warranty? There are *many* posts here on PF1 explaining how Nortons is not only 'bloated' (a resource hog) but worse, it can stuff up the operating system, is not as good at detecting and eliminating viruses and other nasties, and is impossible to get rid of when you get sick of it (you have to download and install a special program to uninstall it). So yes, it does indeed SUCK. But to be fair some people do find Norton's OK. Its just that there are better alternatives. AVG is free and very good. Avast anti-virus is free and excellent. Have a look at this ASUS Notebook: ASUS A8Fm NB Core2 Duo T5600 1.66G 1GB DDR2 80G HD - $2171.25 www.pbtech.co.nz [edit] bugger - just saw "stock on order", but another shop will have similar] Compare: THINKPAD Z61T CORE 2 DUO T5500 1.6GHZ 512MB 80GB 14 WXGA CDRW/DVDRW $2,129 but only 512 RAM www.softwareshop.co.nz Unfortunately the above have Vista. Maybe they will install WinXP, not sure. At the risk of getting bashed by PF1 purists, you could save $$, get a 3 year full warranty, WinXP and a 'nice' video card by going here: www1.ap.dell.com Good luck and be sure to come back and tell us what you get. |

Again, at the risk of getting bashed: it is hard to beat Dell - 3 yr warranty, video card, big hd, WinXP ... all within your price range. |

| 542969 | 2007-04-23 05:22:00 | I would go for Vista,much better than XP,or at least Bill has spent 2 billion trying to make it so. | Cicero (40) | ||

Only catch with going for Vista is that Photoshop won't run on it till Adobe brings out CS3 for Windows at the end of the year, however all the current versions of Photoshop will run on XP which was specified in the first post. |

Might go for photoshop or similar is how I read it,suggesting he doesn't have photoshop at the moment. |

| 542972 | 2007-04-23 05:42:00 | I figured that he didn't currently have Photoshop which is why I said XP, although there are other similar and possibly cheaper Photo editing options available, however, I am not sure how many are "Vista ready" at this stage. If it was me, I would hold off buying Vista till the first Service Pack at the end of the year as there are still too many 3rd party app compatibility issues and printer driver issues to make it worth while. Just buy a Vista capable laptop in the mean time. |

| 542973 | 2007-04-23 07:33:00 | Yes well using XP on the off chance that he might get photoshop may have some merit.Even though I fail to see it. | Cicero (40) | ||
| 542974 | 2007-04-23 07:43:00 | I guess we will just have to wait and see. | winmacguy (3367) | ||
| 542975 | 2007-04-23 10:52:00 | Thanks for the photoshop advice - I don't have anything installed at the moment - guess I'll have to look into how expensive it'll be. I'll try and get someone to give me a demo of Windows Vista, so I can check out it's features. Although the guy in the chain-store-that-shall-remain-nameless did show me its new and improved alt-tab feature! Newbie's a she, by the way ;) |
