542455 2007-04-20 01:54:00 Hi Mike, dont worry about the others, not sure if they are jealous or what!

32bit XP will only use up to 3.75Gb of RAM, so 3Gb should be good. What are you using the workstation for?.

Instead of the 2nd graphics card, you could just get 1 and buy a Matrox Dualhead or Triplehead
www.matrox.com
If its a pre-built, I doubt you can change mobo etc.

As for price, the Xeon Dual cores are not cheap, so would imagine you would pay around $3000-$3500 for it.I like the look of that Matrox Triplehead, but it won't quite do the job for me :D It treats the three screens as one big one, whereas three separate screens are treated as such off three video card outputs (so I can maximise a window to one screen, rather than across all three).

I'm using the machine for GIS work (geographic information system), doing mapping and a lot of geoprocessing (matching information from a number of SQL databases with spatial/geographic information) - it requires a bit of grunt. I've had one process on my current machine (P4HT 3.0GHz with 1.5GB RAM) run for 18 hours at 80-100% before I killed it (because I had to do more work LOL).

Mike.

542456 2007-04-20 02:01:00 Mike, you can still maximise the window to each screen, and have 1 big screen at the same time, that is how i use my monitors at work. Great for big spreadsheets.
Actually probably cost about the same as having to graphics card anyway. Maybe you should look at getting 2 dual Xeons if it pins your cpu like you mentioned
Do you use bespoke software, maybe 64bit is a better O/S for you.

542458 2007-04-20 02:23:00 I currently have 1.5GB and it's not enough. I am consistently using around 2 or 3 GB of virtual memory for running single processes. :D

What are you running that requires so much RAM?

Generally for normal purposes 1 Gb is plenty.

Steve!, are you bothering to read the thread?

542460 2007-04-20 04:06:00 dual xeon with 3 video cards and 4 gigs of ram . $6100
from apple plus the cost of OS. you could price one up on the dell site

Obviously not. Why else would I ask? I missed it even after scrolling up and down. Some of us are not perfect as you must be.

542462 2007-04-20 05:32:00 Hi all,

I'm getting a new PC at work and was wondering if someone who knew this kind of hardware could tell me what I should be paying for something with these specs:

IBM ZPro Intellistation - 922862M
Intel Xeon 5130 processor (2GHz Dual core with 4MB cache)
3 GB memory
160 GB 7200 rpm SATA hard disk
2 x NVidia FX 550 video cards (4 DVI video ports)
DVD multi burner
gigabit Ethernet
Three year warranty

Also, I've been told anything more than 3GB or RAM is useless in a 32bit Windows environment... is this true?
Which would be better, running Windows 2003 or Win XP SP2?

Cheers,
Mike.

542463 2007-04-20 05:38:00 Sorry about the previous post and obvious question.

First: (Edit: I see you have answered what you do for a day job.)
Second: 3GB of RAM
