542813 2007-04-21 05:45:00 I just bought a Refurbished Dell GX270 desktop box.

Specs:

P4 2.8
512MB RAM
40GB HDD
CD-Rom
XP Pro Installed
Keyboard and mouse

Booted the machine and hooked it up to an old Compaq MV520 14'' CRT. All goes well until the screen goes blank and the monitor has a message saying "out of range! Check PC display settings"

Ok so I figure the resolution is to high for the monitor to display. Reboot into safe mode and Windows tells me that setup is incomplete. I can't use my LCD because I don't have D-sub cables for it.

So I thought... ok re-install Windows and go from there. I couldn't find a recovery partition and ended up ringing the place I bought the machine from and the guy tells me that the machine doesn't come with a recovery partition or any discs for that matter (which I think is quite strange...) He tells me that I can use any Windows XP Pro CD and it will work as long as I use the CD Key on the side of the case.

Well I don't have access to an XP Pro disc so I (with regret) downloaded a pirate copy with the intention of doing a repair install then inputting the CD Key I have. Needless to say it didn't work and now I'm stuck without an OS on the machine.

1) What do I do now?
2) Do I take the machine back to the store and ask them to re-install XP Pro using my CD key?
3) Do I go back to the store and ask (demand) a CD?

Shouldn't all machines (such as this) come with an original OS CD or at the very least a recovery partition?
Can I use someone else's copy of Windows and install it using my CD key?

Any ideas would be helpful?

Cheers

PS - Please don't flame me for downloading the pirate copy, I know it's wrong but I am in possession of a valid/authentic CD key and just wanted to re-install using the CD key I do have.

542814 2007-04-21 06:08:00 If it said it has XP on it, or it had / came with a CD, when you brought it, I would go back and demand the CD. Speedy Gonzales (78)
542815 2007-04-21 06:13:00 It comes with XP Pro pre-installed. It was going through the setup process when I 1st booted the machine but because I couldn't see anything due to the monitor issue I couldn't do a re-install.

Thanks Speedy

Oh god, why .

Yes .

Yes, all PCs whether or not you get the disk should have the COA sticker on it somewhere .

542817 2007-04-21 09:54:00 Your situation isn't all the unusual, no idea whether its legal or not. Assuming you've got a legit cd key I see no reason you can't just use any XP cd irrelevant of where its acquired.

If I were in your situation i would acquired another XP cd, far easier than dealing with a seller who seems less than helpful. Have you got any contract or invoice from the seller? I imagine if you try to demand they provide a cd or reinstall windows they will claim they sold it as is where is.
