542698 2007-04-20 15:11:00 Try out Memtest86 (http://www.memtest.org/). Running it for a while will allow you to see if you have faulty ram.

If the screen was glitching then I would put it down to one of your gfx cards being faulty. Have you tried them separetly?

542699 2007-04-20 15:19:00 actually no I have not but it only did that in crossfire mode and Im not running crossfire when installing XP, but you think it might be something with the RAM? the motherboard supports DDR2 800 and the pc says its only DDR2 667 or something like that , and how exactly does memtest work is it a Linux based applet? because if i need to use a floppy thats a no can do i dont have one and my motherboard doesnt have a floppy slot mattman360 (7084)

542701 2007-04-20 19:29:00 Its most probably a hardware prob, if it crashed, when u tried to reinstall/format XP.

Can u run it with just 1 videocard??

It'll either be a videocard or ram/memory prob.

If these are the only two things in the system. Besides the DVD. And the hdd.

Which ASUS board is it?

So, u have 2 1GB simms and 1 512 mb simm? If u have 2.5 GB of ram?

If u r try taking the 512mb simm out, and try to reinstall XP again.

With this post, as theyre related to the same prob

Well, you'll need a USB flash drive (and then somehow, make it bootable), as Memtest needs to boot off something . If u dont have a floppy .

I think its DOS based .

I take it u configured the BIOS before u tried to install XP?

I would also try taking out the 512mb simms, if one is in it .

Then try installing XP .

If that doesnt work, take another simm out, and see if it'll install XP with 1 simm .

If it crashes with 1 simm, replace it with 1 of the other 2 simms (swap them around) .

If it doesnt crash with 1 simm, then you'll know one of the other 2 are faulty .

542705 2007-04-20 20:28:00 Ultimate boot CD has it, run it for atleast 12 hours, it is highly unlikely that it is a mobo issue since it has happened with 4 different ones... I am guessing RAM... and it is best and can avoid RAM issues if you keep everything similar... ie even, same brand and model, size etc The_End_Of_Reality (334)
