I searched the net and found a few posts but not many. Seems like a rare problem. There were only about 2 solutions suggested but frustratingly no-one ever reported back with confirmation of success. I contacted the IT people we use and they'd never heard of it so I could see a reinstall of XP looming................plus all of the updates, networking, printers, etc etc. None of which I'd trust myself to do. Happily (touch wood) I solved the problem tonight when I stayed at work to give it one last try, so I'll explain the steps for any future readers - next post. |

| 542676 | 2007-04-20 13:59:00 | Windows Management Instrumentation seems important and I didn't want to bollux it up. Solutions ranged from a virus (maybe but AVG found nothing on 2 scans) to a corrupted file in WMI, requiring repair from an XP disc, registry edit (shudder) or reinstall. In fact one person reported the same error after a reinstall.......:groan: Here's what I did and whether it is fixed, only time will tell. Run msconfig - Services - untick 2 WMI entries (nothing in Startup). Rightclick My Computer - Manage - Services - Services - scroll down to WMI - Rightclick - Disable Then "Search" for Repository. Copied and saved contents to Desktop just in case....... Opened Repository files and deleted them. This had been impossible until I stumbled upon using msconfig to stop both WMI applications. Apparently the Repository is rewritten when WMI restarts so it should be ok. Checked with Black Viper who didn't think WMI was so important but this PC is on a network so I'm playing safe. Rebooted the pc during these various steps just to be sure. Finally I reset WMI from Disabled to Manual. No sign of the dreaded pop-up so far but then, I haven't started WMI. I think I'll leave it a few days and see what happens. Anyway I hope this helps some other person cos I was up a gum tree. Finally, what is this all about? Some of you will understand I'm sure. |
