542488 2007-04-19 23:20:00 I got my hands on an old computer to muck about with . Things were fine, and I hadnt booted it up for a while since yesterday, well turns out I still havent booted it up .

Specs that I know: Intel Celeron, 64MB RAM, 5GB HDD, CD Rom drive . .

so I went to turn it on, nothing . on the tenth or so go it started but made a weird noise and nothing on the monitor . At first I thought it was the CPU fan (it wasn't spinning, just making tiny little 1/8 spins, is this normal?) but turns out the noise was the CD ROM drive . So I unplugged that, the noise has stopped .

Oh, dunno why it wouldnt turn on yesterday (I tried using another power cable and that wouldnt turn it on yesterday), but today it turns on each time . Weird .

So anyway, the anoying noise has gone, the cpu fan still does its tiny little spins, but no output to monitor .

I have now, perhaps unwisely, removed the cpu fan, heatsink and processor . ha! pretty foolish probably, but there was SO much dust . Saying I havent damaged anything, is it possible to reuse these without the adhesiveness of the processor and heatsink?

What do you think the problem is?
Thanks for any help .

542489 2007-04-20 00:26:00 How long has it been turned off before you began to use it?

If a long while, try a new CMOS battery. If it does fire up you might need to re-set the BIOS. Check that all cables are properly seated especially the monitor, in fact remove the monitor cable and then put it back in and make sue that it is secure. Can you attach the monitor to another PC in case the monitor is US?

542490 2007-04-20 00:29:00 If theres not much left on the heatsink get some thermal grease (a little bit).

And put it on.

And no dont leave the heatsink off. Thats why its on there. It'll overheat, and it'll keep shutting down.

Put it and the CPU fan back on.

And if the CPU fan isnt spinning fast, (or is just moving), replace it.

Just make sure you put the CPU back the right way.

Has it got a speaker?? If it has, can u hear any beeps, or did u hear any beeps?

542491 2007-04-22 03:50:00 thanks for your replies.

The PC wasnt making any beeps, but now is....sometimes.

80% of the time I turn it on it starts up, I hear the hard drive whirr and thats it it just sits there, the rest of the time it will do the same thing but after sitting for a while it will then give one long repeated beep.

I think maybe it's a PSU problem, as it still doesnt even turn on every time. Im gonna try a different PSU and maybe some new memory.

I forgot to say that after I took off the CPU and put it back on it booted twice, the first time it had an error (mentioned CMOS), I pressed del I think and it booted into beautiful windows 98. I think its booted up once more after that.
