1414176 2016-01-08 23:11:00 Is MS still doing updates for win7?
I have just installed it on a old Compaq.
It's going ok, but thought I'd update it anyway.
Been searching for over an hour so far.

Yes they are.

Often its downloading in the background. Usually I just go restart, and sometimes updates will be sitting there ready to install. Once the first lot go in the others work as before.

1414178 2016-01-08 23:59:00 Also just remembered: sometimes a newer installer will work. support.microsoft.com

OR

Run the trouble shooter support.microsoft.com

Just working through the MS support stuff now.

May have to come back to it later.
Need to get out & stretch my legs.

1414181 2016-01-09 00:52:00 Only thing that wont get updated, will be IE. MS will no longer be supporting IE 8,9,10 after the 12th Jan (the next patch Tuesday). That's if they use IE Speedy Gonzales (78)

IE11 will still get updates though.

1414184 2016-01-09 04:51:00 Not really gaining any ground with this.

Bit of history on this system.

Compaq nx5000
Pentium M 1.6Ghz
1GB Ram
60GB HD
About 2004 vintage.
Came out with XP originally

Actually runs quite well with win7, thought it might be a slug.
Everything runs ok but there is now, no sleep function. So it has to be shut down when not in use.
Ok so far but each time it starts it reloads the graphics drivers.
I was hoping a update may sort this out.

So from info gained from the links in post three:

I installed Windows update agent.
Then ran Windows Automated Trouble shooter.
That did a lot of checking, resolving, detecting, collecting & finally resolved a list of things.

But we still cant find any updates.
The only one showing in the installed list is KB976902.
I am assuming the trouble shooter installed this one.

I have set updates to auto & it's currently checking for updates atm.

Sorry meant to add, got the drivers from this site

www.driverscape.com

1414185 2016-01-09 06:22:00 Wouldn't touch any of those places for drivers. ALWAYS look at the manufactures site first. Never know what sort of "extras" you may get.

From the HP site - Which they claim

Some of the hardware in your notebook cannot run windows 7 which is why there are no drivers for it.

I would try manually installing the XP drivers from your notebook's support and driver pages for the drivers that W7 didn't install such as the graphics and audio.
