1413688 2016-01-01 23:43:00 Yesterday my internet was working fine at home, then at about 4pm I couldn't open anything. I did the usual - rebooted the modem, restarted the computer - but nothing. I rang Spark and they suggested resetting the modem which seemed to work. For about five minutes... then the same problem came back, I couldn't open any pages. I got messages saying the page could not be opened as the server where it was located was not responding. I got this message regardless of the site - Stuff, Google, Facebook, etc.

I rang Spark again and they suggested resetting the modem again as everything seemed fine at their end. I did so, and again everything worked for five minutes or so, then it froze. According to the settings in system preferences (I'm running an iMac, connecting through ethernet) everything is fine.

This morning the power, DSL, internet and WLAN lights were on, but not the LAN1 light. I reset the modem, back in business - but not for long as happened yesterday. It's frustrating.

Spark suggested replacing the extension cord (there is no phone plug in the room the computer is in) and filters, so as that is a relatively cheap option, I'm about to do that. I rang the neighbours (we live in a rural area) and their internet is fine, so it doesn't appear to be a problem with the line coming from the street.

Any other suggestions? As mentioned, it was working fine up until yesterday and from about 4pm it's been connecting intermittently. It wasn't connected before, but as I was about to head into town I tried another page and it was back online again. I thought I'd try and post a question here in the hope if it doesn't stay on, someone else may have a suggestion as to how I can fix it!

Thanks in advance!

1413689 2016-01-02 00:01:00 I am wondering if it had anything to do with a couple of videos I was trying to load to Facebook. They were more than a minute long and both times nothing happened. I tried loading one from the desktop rather than my phone and it got to 55.8% loaded then froze so I left the page. Both have now appeared on Facebook and my internet seems to be working fine. I may hold off changing anything until I see if any more problems occur, but if anyone has any suggestions as to what may have happened or how to stop this happening in the future, please let me know. 1413690 2016-01-02 00:59:00 Bit of a process of elimination.

First thing id do is change the router ( beg steal or borrow one if you don't have a spare), doesn't have to be anything fancy or high spec and see if the same problem happens with that. If it does then the problem is elsewhere.

Check to see if the Router is overly warm / Hot when its cutting out. Sounds like what ever is happening is doing so after its been reset for a while. Routers love heat ( being smart :p) and it can cause all sorts of problems with out warning.

1413691 2016-01-02 02:02:00 The router/modem doesn't appear to be hot, but the problems are continuing. I had a period of about 15 minutes (including turning the computer off and restarting it to check it wasn't a fluke!) where everything was working as normal, but now it's down to dial-up speed. It's taken me about five minutes to get this thread to open and I had to refresh the page twice to start with.

I got my phone working with the cellular data but every time I switch it back to wireless, it seems to stop the desktop connection going. And those blasted videos I was trying to upload HAVE uploaded and chewed through ALL the carried over data I had built up - and then started eating into this month's allocation!

I'm starting to feel a bit Queenish - I'm going slightly mad...

1413692 2016-01-02 02:16:00 God knows how two videos could use up the more than 1.5GB I had carried over but it appears that's what it's done.

The other thing I'm finding is that when I connect my iPhone to the wireless connection at home (as I have done for years), it doesn't seem to work - and at the same time, it seems to stop the desktop connection working. If I switch the phone to cellular data and turn off the wifi connection, the desktop internet seems to work fine. As soon as I turn the wifi on the phone back on again, no desktop connection.

Just what I was going to say.

1413694 2016-01-02 02:52:00 I thought I'd try the iPad to see if that interfered with it too, and when I click on the wifi settings it prompts me to log in, but there is no way of doing so - there is only a 'done' button on the top right of the screen but nothing underneath apart from a line that says 'success'. If I click 'done' it allows me to access the internet - and it's not interfering with the desktop! But when I do the same with the iPhone, for some reason it stops the desktop connection working.

I've currently got a Home Gateway that Spark provided when we changed providers. Previously I had a separate modem and wireless router, A Dynalink RTA 1320 that used to heat up a lot, and a D-Link DIR-300. If I DO need to replace the router, what can you suggest that is good but won't break the bank? I've just had to replace my keyboard after spilling a glass of water over it and I have trademark registrations due next month so I'm broker than broke right now!

1413695 2016-01-02 03:25:00 If you still have to old setup, try that if that's all you have just change the settings to Sparks, doesn't need to be on for weeks as it appears everything turns pear shaped within 15 Minutes.

You need to eliminate or confirm the router as a source of the problem.

If you decide to get another / replacement -- Just a suggestion: I've been using TP-Links for a while now, they come in various degrees of cost, from a real basic adsl / Wireless model at around mid $60 ish upwards. Seem to be very reliable.

BUT it would be better to try another first if you can get hold of one just in case its not the router, but it does sound like it considering all devices drop out,its the One common source with the exception of the cables / Connections / Sockets.

1413696 2016-01-02 03:28:00 And now it gets more bizarre... I rang Vodafone to see what had happened to my data and found in the short time I had switched to cellular data, the damned phone updated everything, which is where all my data went! Bugger.

But, weirdly, I have now connected the iPhone back to wireless and it's not causing problems on the desktop. I can post, switch from one page to another - and all is working fine. If anyone can tell me what's going on I'd appreciate it, but at the moment, all is working as it was before 4pm yesterday. Are aliens involved? Did my computer fall into a black hole for 24 hours? Will I still need to replace my router? Am I going mad?

1413697 2016-01-02 03:37:00 I spoke too soon... while the button to choose wifi was clicked on the iPhone, it wasn't until I tried to look at Facebook that everything froze both on the phone and on the desktop. I've just got the old router out now and am trying to work out where all the connections go. When I unplug the existing router and plug this one in, how on earth will I know what to set it to, or will the computer automatically do that for me? I think I've figured out the connections between the modem and the wireless router, but what if it asks me for passwords or something? The Spark router has a password on the back that I have to enter on the phone or iPad when it's been reset. It's been so long since I used the old router and modem that I can't remember what I need to do to set it up. Beemer (6956)
