1413591 2015-12-31 02:38:00 I wonder if anyone else has ever had this odd problem . I am running 32 bit Windows 7 Premium Home N on a Dual Pentium E2180 .

Until recently Flight Simulator 2004 was running perfectly . When it wouldn't start one day I tried reloading it . However, when I loaded the install DVD it would not Autoplay as it has always done previously .

A quick check revealed that other DVDs containing Set Up executables behaved in the same way . So I tried opening the DVD contents in Windows Explorer and running the Set Up application from there . The first odd thing I noticed was that all the files icons in Explorer appeared as blanks . When I tried to run the Set Up it just went into la-la land with the DVD light on while it whirled away forever . So I can't load any program from a DVD any more . Movie DVDs autostart and play with no problems .

Second check . Try the FS DVD in another computer . It started up just fine .

Next check, Swap a known good DVD drive with mine . Made absolutely no difference .

Conclusion . It's got to be software, not hardware .

Software and Games in Control Panel Autoplay is set to "Install or run programs from your media" .

Has anyone out there got any ideas on what I should check to try and solve this bizarre problem?

1413592 2015-12-31 02:51:00 What does device manager say for your DVD?

Did you install any programs like daemontools. Programs like this will screw a dvd up

1413593 2015-12-31 05:00:00 A few things to check.

Make sure services is running on Auto Play:

Click Start> In search box type services.msc <Press Enter> Scroll down to Shell Hardware Detection, and make sure that it is Running, and the Startup Type is set to Automatic. If not, start the service and change the Startup Type.

If it is running, then click start, type in CMD - Right click it, run as administrator --- Type in net start shellhwdetection Press Enter. Once completed reatart the computer, see if the auto run works.

Failing that - go to www.sevenforums.com Option 1 - download and merge the Autoplay Reg file.

Also Check----- Click start, type Default, select default programs, make sure the options to auto play for DVD is selected.

1413595 2016-01-04 01:14:00 Many thanks for that. All checks you recommend are positive; I didn't have to change a thing. Thorough scan detected no Malware. I have considered reinstalling everything from scratch - but how can I do that when DVD is behaving the way it is?

I have had Alcohol 52% running in the past and wondered if that might be the root of my problems. So I tried uninstalling it. Wrong!!! Even Revo Uninstaller won't do that for me.

Incidentally that was me that put this post on PC Review UK. I just thought I would try and get some help closer to home.

1413596 2016-01-04 01:24:00 Alcohol or any cd / dvd emulation program can and will screw up the registry settings for a DVD

Does the dvd show a error code 19 in device manager, if you dbl click on it?

When you say you used Alcohol 52% in the past how long ago was that??

Run the tool here for Win7. (support.microsoft.com) See if that fixes it

Some progress. No errors showed up for my DVD drive in Device Manager. Ran the MS fixit tool and it said it had made an adjustment when it finished. Installation programs still won't Auto Start from a DVD even though Autoplay is On and I still cannot run FS9 Setup from the DVD via Windows Explorer. However, I can now manually run Setup from my W7 installation disc, something I could not do previously. So at least the way is clear to return my system to a virgin state and reinstall everything from scratch. That's Plan B. Revo Uninstaller still won't touch Alcohol 52% even in Hunter Mode - says it can't find an installation package and suggests I try uninstalling it manually. There's no Uninstall option within Alcohol and no mention of it in Help.

I've had Alcohol 52% installed for several years - under XP and again with W7 - and never had any problems with it. I don't think I've got any option now but to go with Plan B.

Thanks for your help.
