1413553 2015-12-30 01:29:00 When I had a new computer built last year a miscommunication meant that a DVD rom was installed. I need a dvd writer and am wondering something like an LG GH24NSD 1 24x DVD Writer SATA OEM from Computer Lounge would be ok. My Computer has a 1TB WD 64MB Blue Sata hard drive. With Speedy's help I replaced an optical drive in my old computer so hopefully can so same in this computer. Thanks bellbird (6169)

Is the old one SATA or IDE? Should have SATA if its new

1413557 2015-12-30 02:14:00 thanks Speedy and dug. I'll leave the installed rom (sata) in and install the new drive so no doubt I'll be back for help when I get the drive. "shouldn't be a prob" easy for you to say Speedy, lol. So you guys think the LG would be ok? bellbird (6169)
1413558 2015-12-30 02:20:00 Yup if you want a dvd writer that's a dvd writer :banana Speedy Gonzales (78)

1413560 2015-12-30 02:35:00 No probs, you dont really need both. The writer will do what the normal dvd does, but writes as well

Altho, people these days are using flash drives more than dvd's / dvd / bluray writers. And a flash drive would be faster

I may remove the dvd in my new build from last year. I can get what I need either over the network or online

I haven't used it, since I installed it in July last year !

1413561 2015-12-31 00:56:00 You connect power to it, connect a SATA cable from a spare port to the drive, and you're done. It really is that simple. The only complications generally is if there are not enough spare power or SATA connectors.

I decided a few builds ago not to put optical drives in any more and just to get a portable one for when I need it, then that died and somehow I ended up with an optical drive in 2 of my machines again :)
They really don't get much use though, and I almost never burn a disc. I still have blank DVDs I bought several years ago when I was using them more often.

For any future builds if I need to buy an optical drive it'll be external, I'll only install an internal one if I have one already.

1413562 2015-12-31 05:19:00 Personally I ask a customer if they want a DVD writer installed, most say yes because they still play DVD's and buy software that comes with a CD/DVD.

They are cheap enough, around $30 for a DVD writer.

Not like when they first came out, Got an External CD Writer x 2 Speed ( Real fast - LOL) - Over $1000.00 -- That's not a typo, one thousand.

Still use CD's daily, to fix PC's.
