1406591 2015-08-18 07:51:00 What are you trying to achieve?

Less disk footprint?

Less memory usage?

Something else?

An open whinging letter questioning Firefox users intelligence to choose their browser defaults has nothing to do with this.

Simple really....choice.

1406592 2015-08-18 08:06:00 Why is desktop search so slow anyway and why when I type say windows update does it show documents by default and I then have to select settings to get where I need to be? gary67 (56)

You have choice

You can choose to install another browser, another media player, another photo viewer, to disable the tiles, to not use voice recognition and so on

You have the choice to use another version of Windows like Windows Embeddded, or ChromeOS, or Mac OSX or Mint or Ubuntu or ...

1406594 2015-08-18 08:08:00 Theres a lot more complaints all over the internet than good points.

If only good new points were listed ther wouldn't be many pages. 1 actually.

98% of the "good points" are not really new, they have been there all the time, just located in a different place.

I've just gone to the start of this thread, do you know haw many "new" options, are actually listed that have not been in previous OS's ? -- None / Zero / Zip / Nada (they have been there in previous OS's,just people forget or don't know about them). Everything else is a revamp of what has already been there in the past. Excluding any new Apps, like 3D Builder & phone companion.

About the only "new" items are Cortana - when it will work in NZ and Edge Browser , theres the 2% to add to the 98% above :)

The "bad" is the advertising that's offered by default.

As usual, you are probably correct

the reason why you hear about the bad points and problems is because people talk about them or put it in forums etc

they don't do the same thing when they have success. That is a proven fact.

This is also why when most newer companies say they “take feedback,” they mean “look at usage data.” Verbatim feedback is widely known to have such a low signal-to-noise ratio to be nigh unusable.

1406596 2015-08-18 08:30:00 What would be a useful option, in the tiles -- Allow each tile thats Pinned to have its color changed to what a user would like, at the moment you can change them, although its all the same.

An example are the following: Edge= Blue, Health & Fitness = Orange , News = Red, Store = Green etc -- easy to spot by their colors.

this would be great feedback to put into the Windows Feedback tool so its tracked by Microsoft as they design and develop the future Windows 10 releases, next big one comes out in November.

Some of the things (in fact a lot of the things) that people have been moaning about on here are already fixed in these newer releases.

That is patently obvious, but it rather conveniently sidesteps the lack of choice of not installing features like Edge, Tiles etc etc.

cool. how would you go about doing this?

throw up a dialog box and ask people what features to install?

vs.

pick some intelligent defaults and then let people customise and use things like "Turn Windows features on and off" like today

you can also build yourself a Windows 10 OS image that has a customised start menu without tiles, and without Apps like Edge installed. Download the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT 2013 Update 1)

1406600 2015-08-18 09:35:00 As usual, you are probably correct Wouldn't say that :) Its just a lot of functions get changed about, there's many functions a OS can do, What someone knows is there someone else wont. NO ONE uses all their computers functions.

While doing some exploring today, had a look in the privacy settings, even though some items already mentioned many times have been disabled, it was still a bit of a HMMMMMM as to what programs use what on your computer. Disabled a LOT and the speed increase was noticeable on the old Celeron I'm mucking about with.

Be a devil -- Go explore your settings ;)

On A good note: one thing that IS an improvement is a few settings can be changed without the need to reboot.
