The reason that they import coal is because as usual the Government allows it. Local resources should have priority. Its the same with un-recyclable plastic packaging. The Government should make it mandatory to only use recyclable materials, same as they do in Germany. Manufacturers soon find ways of doing it. | mzee (3324) | ||
| 1406823 | 2015-08-26 09:11:00 | Coal can NEVER be clean burning , all we can do is remove the soot . Burning coal allways spits out greenhouse gas Carbon + burning = CO2 (same goes for wood, we are just burning the carbon in the wood) NZ has recently permanently closed down its big coal fired electricity plant . If Coal were such a great option, that would never happen. If coal to petrol was such a great option, that would be being used world wide on a much bigger scale, not just the few operations doing so . Agreed but with respect, its a meaningless statement. Oxidation (burning) of any fuel be it wood, coal, oil, or organic gas results in heat+waste products. Which includes CO2 plus others. And its only the coal powered turbines at Huntly which are being run down by Genesis. The gas turbines will continue to run. The coal turbines are old and inefficient but if they were new, then they would continue to run. Coal isn't disappearing any time soon. The coal supplied to Huntly comes from Solid Energy and Indonesia - there is a two year stockpile. Not all coals are equal just as not all oils are equal. Anthracite (which my parents valued highly) burns hot enough to melt fire grates but by golly, the house is warm. :D Bituminous coal is better (not so fierce) and can be used for manufacturing cement and steel. Then there are the sub-bituminous coals going down to lignite. These are suitable for power generation and of course in your multi-fuel burner. The main point is that having a coal seam next door doesn't mean it's the correct coal for your purpose. Which is why coal gets shipped. |

As far as I know you are correct. Huntly is closing down its coal fired boilers and they have about two years stockpile of coal as Winston pointed out. But as a matter of interest, which you don't see pointed out, is that a byproduct of Coal produced by Power Stations is Fly Ash which makes better concrete than Portland Cement. Golden Bay Cement was taking all that Huntly could produce. And given that modern Coal Powered Stations are similar to cars and trucks and have reduced their emissions considerably over the years I get sick of this "Pagan Green Paranoia", when one Volcano or a Bush Fire makes the Power Stations contribution to global warming insignificant. |

Me too, especially as CO2 is natural gas, and the world is full of it. And especially as NZ has planted lots of trees. And yes one decent volcano must spit out enough for several years of man made CO2 |
