1406571 2015-08-18 05:26:00 businesses with myopic stances when it comes to internet access will never attract top talent that wants to work there. Stop people from doing that, and they just do it on their smartphone.

No, but the average office worker is just an av joe & doesnt need internet to do his job.
Top talent isnt really the av office worker
Many business would love to block all unnecessary internet access , and some do try (unsucessfully) . Look at hardware firewall logs & you see exactly
where workers are going on the internet, when they should be on the job.....opps , as Im doing now :p

Good point re the smartphone, Ive been in offices where the boss needed to crack down on smartphone use during work hours, staff going for a long 'toilet braek' and taking the phone.
Of course there has to be some give and take, if I'm expected to work more than the std 8 hours a day & have to work some weekends, work through lunchtime , then I expect management to look the other way when I spend time on the internet doing other stuff .

1406572 2015-08-18 05:34:00 If Microsoft is doing it wrong so is Apple, so is Google, all of the OSes can connect to the internet and play media.

walk down the street and ask random strangers if they expect an end user computing device to be able to connect to the internet and play media.

My wife works for a very large company in NZ, and I can tell you for a fact they don't have music, or even any speakers on their computers, they are not required.

They have hundreds of computers within the business and the only ones that actually play music while people are WORKING are the ones in the training room, and most of the time its actually power points that are used.

Heres a thought - maybe next time you do a presentation in wgtn, if I were there and to ask why you didn't use a media player if its at the end of your presentation / work (question time) and see what the response is shell we ?

There are two basic types of computers - ones that are used for work and the other for entertainment.

Just because a computer is capable of tasks doesn't mean they are used. That's totally different to the statement
someone doing real work doesn't need a browser or media player?.

Love to see the response if someone had disciplinary action taken for continually playing music during work hours and use your response --The guy from Microsoft said I could because the computer is capable of it -- yeah right.

Your office must be a noisy place every one playing different music, watching videos all the time while working ?

Not sure if you have heard of earphones or headphones? Of course os not cool to sit there and blast out music

Not that that stops businesses from cramming people into open plan offices where everyone can hear each others phone calls .

Its as simple as this:

Thanks to the European union, and Korea, Microsoft sells a version of Windows without a browser and without a media player

What do you think the sales of those operating systems are?

Almost 0, its a rounding error . 99 . 9999999% of people buy the normal version

Because consumers expect an operating system to be able to browse the web and play media

More than 50% of business apps are delivered through a browser requiring internet access.

1406575 2015-08-18 05:47:00 Microsoft Edge is as useless as nipples on a Bull!
No Ad Block
No short cut F11 for full screen, in fact I can't find a means of toggling full screen.
Hardly any Right Click commands, no back, no save graphic etc.
No Ctrl U to see code.
No extensions
Very few settings.
The joke is that this is supposed to be an improvement on Internet Explorer!!!
Why don't they leave the Browsers to Google, Opera & Firefox?

I was in a office this morning fixing up a couple of laptops that had been changed to W10 over the weekend, problems connecting to their server after the change . They had, at the time 11 people there all working at their jobs, not one had any music playing . The laptops and desktops were capable of playing but they weren't, yet according to you they HAVE to have music on ? Please explain why they were doing REAL WORK with no music ?

Microsoft sells a version of Windows without a browser and without a media player Just goes to show how stupid Microsoft can be then, why make something no one ever buys - I know why, its because they have to legally .

As I said before, just because a computer is capable of something doesn't mean the function has to be used .

That's why I use the Old IE by default.

Maybe one day Edge will grow up and have the options ? ;)

Edge currently works OK for basic stuff, but still needs more work.

I really cannot believe that this discussion about why an operating system has a browser and media player included continues

Sure in the example you used you didn't need internet access or need a media player to do your real work

You didn't need it then to do your real work

But you needed it at some point.

ANYWAY -- One of the things that appear to have improved is the search. Once a person turns off all the advertising options it works quite well.

Nathan -- Are there any plans to make cortana work in NZ anytime soon ( on computers or Phones). That feature would be handy for some people ???

The 50+% of business apps that are delivered through a browser require a browser

Anyone that needs to watch a training video, or a health and safety video etc need a media player

I'd say that is real work, wouldn't you??

There are no dates that we can share currently sorry on Cortana

But our goal with Cortana is to deliver a culturally relevant, approachable and helpful assistant as part of a great experience on Windows 10 devices .

In order to provide the high-quality experience of a digital personal assistant, Cortana requires extensive work on local voice models and the continuous availability of rich local data . We will continue to develop market by market to ensure a great Cortana experience .

We too are eager to share Cortana with Kiwi’s but cannot yet confirm timelines .
