1406561 2015-08-18 03:39:00 what good is an operating system that can't download stuff from the Internet, watch movies or listen to music? A workstation - where people are meant to be working not playing on Facebook or twitter or listening to music /videos :P wainuitech (129)
1406562 2015-08-18 04:03:00 No operating system does any of those things.... Well ok windows is built around a browser to some extent but still That would be additional bundled software in each case. dugimodo (138)

No OS does any of those things?

Android has a browser and media player built in

iOS has a browser (and its rendering engine cannot be changed) and media player built in

OSX has a browser and media player built in

ChromeOS has a browser and media player built in

most end user focussed Linux distros have a browser and media player built in

1406566 2015-08-18 04:54:00 right. nice joke. someone doing real work doesn't need a browser or media player? Yep. Do it all the time. This office PC while its fully capable of doing all of the above internet and music. Everything is be done locally from the PC or servers.

Dont need a browser eg: IE, firefox, chrome or what ever to do my accounting or general work with word or excel or any of the other programs as they are all local.

While obviously a person does need a browser to download some things, its not required to run the programs.

MANY businesses don't need cloud computing, in fact many refuse to use it, its all done locally from either the PC's or from servers.

Maybe that's whats wrong with the current OS's - Microsoft think everyone needs all the extra's when they don't.

MANY workplaces have strict polices about doing certain things on the work computers, Eg: general web browsing, listening to music (streaming) Facebook, twitter -- A sack-able offense. In fact lots of office PC's dont even have speakers - so whats the point of music ?

Many places could lose the internet and still continue, maybe the biggest hassle would be if the email didn't work.
This happened on Sunday, the internet went down for a while - no big deal - just carried on as normal doing my GST,my on the local accounting program ;)

Just curious - WHY would you need a media player to do work ? A few roadshows I've been to that you were presenting not once did a media player come on - power point - Yes, Media Player NO.

1406567 2015-08-18 04:55:00 Well, cast your mind back to Windows 3.0/3.1, that was when Bill Gates said the internet would never catch on :)

To be able to dial out with a modem meant adding comport commands to system.ini file, loading your own winsock, installing your own browser and email client, and if you wanted to watch movies, or listen to music, or manage photos etc then programs had to be downloaded as extras.

cool. yes trumpet winsock I remember it well

but the year is 2015 so who cares about an OS that came out in the 90s, its irrelevant. The internet was not main stream in 1995. Now it is.

FWIW the following OS - Windows 95 did have a dialler and TCP/IP stack built in, and then Windows 95 OEM Service Release 1 was the first release of Windows to include a browser

Music --- certainly capable of it, but hardly ever while working.

If Microsoft is doing it wrong so is Apple, so is Google, all of the OSes can connect to the internet and play media.

walk down the street and ask random strangers if they expect an end user computing device to be able to connect to the internet and play media.

businesses with myopic stances when it comes to internet access will never attract top talent that wants to work there. Stop people from doing that, and they just do it on their smartphone.
