| 1413718 | 2016-01-02 20:40:00 | I'm going to see if the neighbours have wifi (one is still on dial-up!) and try to connect the phone to that. Maybe it won't connect to any wifi and that could be a problem with the phone. The current modem/wireless router is a Home Gateway HG630B. It was supplied by Spark about 11 months ago. The old modem is a Dynalink RTA-1320 that has an external power source. The wireless router is a D-Link DIR-300 that also has an external power source. The USB hub plugs into my computer and is powered by that. I only use it for plugging in cameras, etc when downloading photos. It's not used for anything else like the keyboard or printer. I have reset the modem (by poking a paperclip in the back until the lights go off) about half a dozen times and it hasn't fixed the problem. I have Googled captive.apple.com and tried what was suggested (short of resetting the phone to factory settings as I am not sure what I would lose, and I'm not keen to try the overheating/freezing tip either!) but I still have the same problem. When I turn on the wifi on the phone it shows that I am connected - the signal strength shows at the top, but when I try and post something on Facebook for instance, it shows a status bar but when it gets to the end, I get a message saying 'will retry your post' but nothing happens, or I get a message saying 'taking a while to post' and then the retry message comes up again. While the wifi is seemingly connected on the phone, the internet connection on the desktop will not work. I just turned on the wifi on the phone and tried loading Stuff's home page - got a message to say 'Safari can't open the page www.stuff.co.nz because the server where this page is located isn't responding'. Turn the wifi off on the phone and refresh the page - and it opens within seconds. Last night with the desktop computer off, pages were loading on the iPad without any trouble, but still not the phone. This morning I've just tried to open Stuff on the iPad while the desktop computer is turned on, but get this message 'Safari could not open the page because the server stopped responding'. Once I've posted this I will shut down the computer and see if the iPad will connect to the wireless when the computer is turned off. If so, this may point to a problem with the modem/wireless router possibly only allowing one device to connect at a time - but it still doesn't explain why the phone won't connect even when the iPad and desktop are turned off. I'll report back after I've shut down the computer and checked the iPad again. I just went to post this thread and got a message asking me if I wanted to leave this page - I clicked 'stay on page' then lost everything. Nothing would connect so I reset the modem and it seems to be working again now. That does seem to indicate a problem with the modem. I'll try and post this now while I still can, then will see if the iPad works once the computer is off. It did last night, but there wasn't anything happening just now. |

| 1413720 | 2016-01-02 20:51:00 | I'll try that - but I suppose I need to confirm it IS the router before trying that. I'm just having trouble doing that, as I don't know how to set up the old one! One of my friend has just got it replaced (free of charge) before X'mas. Just tell them that the router is not working properly as you mentioned here - intermittent problem. After all, you have got nothing to lose. |

I just turned off the computer and as soon as I did the iPad connected to the wifi and opened pages no trouble at all. I turned the computer back on again, and while the iPad was turned on, nothing would load on the computer. I turned off the iPad - still nothing on the computer. I rebooted (not reset) the modem and the pages on the computer loaded - except Facebook, where I got a message saying it could not establish a secure connection (but it loaded just now without any problems). So there is some weird thing happening where one device - desktop or iPad - will connect at a time, but still the phone won't connect to the wifi. I thought at first it was just a problem with the phone, but if only one device will work on the internet at any one time, the problem goes deeper than that. I will await the next bit of advice, but am veering towards ringing a local tech guy as I have spent a day and a half trying to solve this problem without any joy, and I am tired, I've got a blinding headache and I just want to pass over my problem to someone else! If it is a problem with the modem/wireless router, how likely am I to get it replaced by Spark? And as it's a Sunday, I wonder if they would they let me collect a new modem (assuming they had one) from their store in Palmerston North rather than waiting for one to be posted, which would not arrive until later in the week? |

| 1413722 | 2016-01-02 21:08:00 | If you've connected things up properly. It sounds like that modem/router cant handle too many connections at the same time I could have a look with teamviewer, if you want. It maybe a settings in the modem. Depending on what wireless it supports, it maybe on B or G only so if something else is N. It wont connect |

Just explain to them that you have reset the modem a number of times and Power, DSL and the Internet leds are up, also LAN and WLAN. In the meantime you could try disabling the WLAN with Button 2 on the modem, press in for 2 seconds. Then ensure your PC (I presume connected via LAN Port) can communicate over the internet OK. Also check you have lost your Wifi on your Iphone Once done then turn back on the WLAN by pressing button 2 for 2 seconds. It may be you will also have to re-setup your Wifi, and this can be done using a manual configuration on your phone with the SSID number and WLAN Key found on the back of the modem or by using the WPS function if the Iphone supports it, I am not an Iphone user so dont know. There is a lot of info on the Spark Website, just enter HG630b in the Search. |

Unless someone like Speedy can have a look at the modem setup Via team Viewer, your thoughts above may be the best bet. A tech will carry spare modems ( or should) to test. Its possible they take one look at the modem, phone and tablet and see a problem. I don't mean any disrespect, BUT this is going round and round in circles getting nowhere, its only guessing . Simply putting a New Modem from Spark may or may not fix the problem. Sometimes you simply have to be at a place to see a fault. If a person doesn't really know what they are doing or what to look for it may never be fixed. Reminds me of a job a few months back, person was having all sorts of problems with their internet working one minute then not the next, I tried to talk them thorough a few things NOTHING worked, went to see them-- Saw the problem within 5 seconds -- Someone had plugged a cable in the wrong socket. :waughh: But of course no one had touched anything. Hmmmm |

| 1413725 | 2016-01-02 22:13:00 | Right, I just visited the neighbour and was able to log in to their wifi on both the iPhone and the iPad without any trouble. I tried posting on Facebook and the post went through, although it was a little slow. I tried loading pages on the iPad and that worked fine too. So this would definitely seem to support a problem with the modem/wireless router if these devices work fine over the road. Jedsdad, I've just done what you suggested. I turned off the WLAN using the button on the side and I was able to load other pages on the desktop without any trouble. The phone had no wifi - there were no networks to choose from. I then turned the WLAN back on and tried connecting the phone to the wifi. It let me choose the network I use at home, but when I tried to post something on Facebook it would not post, and I had the same problem on the desktop - when the wifi on the phone was turned on, the desktop connection would not work. Turn wifi off on the phone - bingo, the pages loaded on the desktop again without any problems. So I would say the first bit of advice I got about the problem being the router is correct. I'll try Spark again now and explain that I have tried everything other than swinging from the chandelier (only because we don't have one, trust me, I would have tried otherwise!) and am still having problems so I would like a new modem please. I'll ring the shop in Palmerston North and see if they have one as I'd be happy to drive up there and collect it rather than wait for days over the holiday period. |

It sounds like that modem/router cant handle too many connections at the same time I could have a look with teamviewer, if you want. It maybe a settings in the modem. Depending on what wireless it supports, it maybe on B or G only so if something else is N. It wont connect I've allowed other members on here to help me in this way before so wouldn't have a problem, but as the modem was working perfectly until about 4pm Friday and then suddenly developed this problem, would any settings have spontaneously changed or is it still likely to be a fault within the modem itself? I agree with wainuitech (who has helped me in the past) about often it being easier and cheaper to get a professional to look at the problem rather than muck around for days trying to sort it. However, after the phone and iPad both worked fine on the neighbour's wifi, I would tend to think this is a problem with the modem itself, particularly the wireless part. I am not keen to get a tech out to take a look and have him say "yes, it's the modem, you need to replace it". But if that's what people think is the best option, then that's what I'll do. At least I am now confident (and a tad happier) that it doesn't appear to be a problem with the phone. If it had not connected to the neighbour's wifi I would have been rather upset by now! |

| 1413727 | 2016-01-02 22:22:00 | I could check it out now, if you want. Just have to check what the settings are on now (in the modem's wireless settings) It may even be a firmware prob (which may not be easy to update), if it's a Spark modem Is the wireless secure?? Did you put a password in the modem (you're not using something like WPS)?? |
