1413698 2016-01-02 03:46:00 If you are with Spark, ring them, get them to replace the Router. It's usually FREE.

Talk to them nicely. Done that for a few of my friends.

1413699 2016-01-02 03:46:00 I tried plugging in the old modem but it would't connect automatically and I have no idea how to set it up. Any ideas? Beemer (6956)

I'll try that - but I suppose I need to confirm it IS the router before trying that. I'm just having trouble doing that, as I don't know how to set up the old one!

1413701 2016-01-02 03:55:00 No luck setting up the old one. It asked me for the IP address, subnet mask, router address and DNS. I used the first three details from the network system preferences (I assume that's what I should have done) but have no idea what the DNS is so I can't test the old router unfortunately. 1413702 2016-01-02 04:15:00 You may have to put your username and password in it. (when you joined Spark) Thats all I've done with the modems, I've had and it'll do the rest automatically

It should sync / get you online

Just adding:

The Spark settings are not specific to the user.

You can setup the Modem with the Following.

User Name: user@xtrabb.co.nz or user@spark.co.nz
Password: anything you like ( But I always use password) seems to work better.

VPI/VCI = 0/100

1413704 2016-01-02 04:49:00 I'm still not sure I've even got the right connections in the right places. On my blue cable I've got written 'ethernet to modem' on one end and 'ethernet to wireless' on the other, so I figure one end goes in the back of the modem and one in the back of the wireless router. Sorted. But then the grey cable - I assume one end goes in the back of the computer and the other end will only fit in the back of the wireless router - it won't fit in the DSL slot in the back of the modem. I tried putting in what I thought was my username and password but that didn't work, so I'll try those settings wainuitech has suggested and see if I have any luck. At this stage I'm not even able to confirm it is the router but I have changed one of the filters and also the extension cord and I'm still having trouble. Every time I switch the iPhone to wifi (and even then I can't connect to anything, it keeps saying it is re-establishing lost connection but then I get a message saying there is no internet connection), the internet connection on the desktop stops working - websites won't load and I get a message saying 'the server where this page is located is not responding'. Turn wifi off on the phone and voila, the desktop connection works fine again.

Update - I just tried those settings and got 'your computer could not connect to the internet' and something about checking my settings and trying again. So unfortunately at this stage I am unable to try the old modem and see if that solves the problems. The weird thing is, the iPad can connect to the wireless network and it doesn't cause any problems on the desktop - it just seems to be the iPhone. The guy at Vodafone suggested I ring Apple, but to be honest, the thought of spending any more time on the end of a phone talking to a call centre person fills me with dread. He'll no doubt tell me my phone is stuffed and I need a new one.

I did manage to connect to the internet using cellular data on the phone, but the post I made does not appear to have appeared here. The connection was VERY slow too, and accessing Facebook or Stuff is agonisingly slow.

1413705 2016-01-02 05:00:00 So what have you got? A modem/router in 1 or a separate modem and router?

If its a modem/router, all you need is an ethernet cable, plug it into the back of the PC (so you can configure it).

Then you can remove it, if if you use wireless (once you set that up). And the phone cable. So you can plug it into the phone jack. From the back of the modem

1413706 2016-01-02 05:53:00 The Home Gateway one from Spark is a combined modem and wireless router that plugs in with a cable into the computer, no external power source. The D-Link DIR-300 is a wireless router that has an external power source. The Dynalink RTA-1320 is a modem, also with an external power source.

I'm starting to think the problem is with my iPhone. When I have the wifi on my phone turned on I can't get any internet on my desktop. I also can't load any pages when the wifi on the phone is turned on - only when cellular data is on - and even then it's pretty slow.

The reason I'm starting to view the phone with suspicion is the fact I've now got the desktop turned off and wifi won't work on the phone. I tried the iPad and no wifi there either, and the only page that loaded was a setup page for the wireless modem. I rang Spark but their wait time is over an hour so I gave that up as a bad joke. I thought I'd try turning wifi off on the phone just to see if anything happened - and all of a sudden, when I tried loading another page on the iPad, all was working fine. I decided to test this theory of the phone being the problem and turned off cellular data and turned on wifi again. Tried loading another page on the iPad - and several minutes later, I was still waiting for the page to open. 'Could not open page because the server stopped responding'. I turned off the wifi on the phone and tried again - and the page loaded straight away on the iPad.

So now I'm thinking it's a connectivity problem (God knows what) with the phone. I did see a message when I turned on the desktop for the first time today about another computer on the network already using the connection, but I see this often and just close it. Somehow it seems like when the iPhone is connected to my wifi it's stopping any other device using the connection - and yet when the wifi on the phone is turned on, it won't work on the phone!

I live in Levin so am not sure who I could get to look into this here, so what should I do? Is it a problem with the connection, and therefore is it Spark's problem - and is it the router or something else - or is the problem with the phone?

1413707 2016-01-02 05:58:00 Depending on WHAT version of IOS is on that Iphone that may well be the prob. If its got IOS 9 on it, there are major probs with it

IOS 9 will cripple Iphone 4's. Apple are going to get sued over it
