2016-01-07 04:25:00 | So let me explain a little history . I am hoping and think it's the router slowly dying . It's almost identical behaviour to my previous router that this replaced . I would normally just splash out a chunk of cash on a new one but i'm getting fibre in about 5 weeks so keen to make this work until then and confirm it's not something else prior to the fibre install . Unit is 4 years old . It's on 24/7 everyday . Been connected through one ethernet to my desktop and feeding the house wirelessly . On the odd occassion starting about 4 months ago it simply started losing internet connection . All lights appear solid on the unit, but I see a little yellow triangle bottom right of my screen saying no internet . A power cycle usually fixed it . Pointing a desk fan at it appeared to help with this and the problem went away . Now height of summer and since installed a patch panel and 17 wallports usign CAT6 . It's fed via a managed switch which is plugged into one of the ethernet ports in back of router . The dropouts are becoming significantly more frequent . Pointing desk fan is again helping but still seeing one disconnect a day . Unit is hot all the time unless fan is cooling it . Generally one of the kids is gaming, I'm online and somebody may be streaming youtube etc . Generally one of the kids walks through and tells me they lost internet . About 20 seconds later I then see the little yellow triangle appear in the bottom right of screen . Power cyclying always fixes it . Also noticed it's becoming increasingly difficult to log into the unit using 192 . 168 . 1 . 1 . I more than often end up with a reddish screen and a 404 error . Clicking refresh several times may open up the admin menus or may open up a login box again . Generally it's difficult to login and takes several attempts . Been keeping an eye on logs but other than kernel intrusions I see not a lot . Checked it today after turning on desktop and saw the following . It co-incides with my PC booting up from cold . Can someone explain what is happening and if it means something important? 2016/01/07 16:58:00 user crit kernel: eth0 Link UP . 2016/01/07 16:57:58 user crit kernel: eth0 Link DOWN . 2016/01/07 16:57:35 user crit kernel: eth0 Link UP . 2016/01/07 16:57:30 user crit kernel: eth0 Link DOWN . Finally, could there be something wrong with my Cat 6 network that is cuasing these dropouts or is it more likely the wired connections are placing more load upon the modem than the wireless connections were doing in the past? Master phone has an ADSL filter on it . Modem / Router has an ADSL filter on it . Have changed over powerpack, model wall filter and new ethernet cable between modem and PC last night . So far it's been up for 18 hours but we haven't been doing a lot on it today . Thanks for your observations and comments . Ged

Summer is a good time for Routers to playup, every year as soon as it starts getting warmer, routers start failing. Just thrown out two of those in the rubbish, one almost brand new. |

2016-01-08 18:43:00 | I have more time to properly respond now than my quickly rushed post . Router overheating causing it to die is possible, 4 years is a long time to accumulate dust, cooling fans on it, if any, can clog and/or stop working, or the heat sinks aren't working efficient . Not sure how keen you would be to opening it up and cleaning it, but that would be advisable due to its age, else you could try blowing the dust or vacuuming it but I do recommend taking the case off so you can do it properly . What do you do to perform this "power cycle"? Is this just turning off then on the router? or does the computer also get a reboot too? Your attempts to log into the router, is it around the time its playing up? You would expect difficulties if it is . Reddish screen and 404 error, is the normal micro_httpd error page, usually seen when theres an overload of requests happening and you can't get through . The fact that you get the error page still suggests that its working but is unable to give you the page you requested . So if possible, reduce the clients connected to it, so that you can get through easier . This also maybe pointing out that the router can not handle that many connections, resources maybe getting stretched with the router . The log I had explained but what is happening is eth0, is pretty much power of the network interface on the routers first port/only port . I thought you had a switch in place? If a switch was in place, then unless router or switch were rebooted, only then would you get this ethernet up or down message, but it seems router is linked to computer, so its when computer or router reboot . Faulty cable can also cause these messages, but it seems more likely the reboots . When you plug in your cable and you see the network light come on router and computer, thats the "up" message you see, this is before any IP etc has been assigned, does not mean you have a working network, just means they can see each other, once IP is given by DHCP or you manually set it (correctly), makes the network complete . Usually happens instantly once the connection is up, which is why many assume network is working once the lights show up . Sounds like possible overload, a single port router I am assuming, not designed for a large number of clients . Assuming it is based on a 1-4 user household . Theres no master jack these days, usually the filter is placed across all phone wiring into the house and a separate unfiltered or new line is used for your dsl . When you do it yourself, you are literally doing the same thing but using multiple filters . You only filter your non dsl devices, so only filter your phone and leave the router unfiltered, even better to not use the splitter, unless you have a phone off it too . Just go direct from jack to router . Empty jack points, not in use, do not need a filter . So after all this, I think your issue does lie with the router . Cheers, KK

2016-01-09 01:00:00 | You say you have a filter on the modem. These filters are designed to block the high frequency ADSL signals so that doesn't sound like a good idea! But, you may have the modem running off the unfiltered socket of a dual socket filter. Check what you have in more detail and definitely don't have the modem behind a filtered socket. May not fix your problem, but it is a good start.

2016-01-09 21:46:00 | Thanks wainuitech.Guess I'll have to check with NOW first to see if they're happy with a different make! Just looked at NOW-- You can use what ever router you like, their settings are nothing special. support.nownz.co.nz They supply for an ADSL connection the NETCOMM NB604N :yuck::yuck: They are a cheap and sometime troublesome Router. Had one of those as a testing unit once. This is a router I would take to someones place to test their internet connection. Only used it twice and it started to play up - all the lights come on for a second then died. Got it replaced under warranty, and the replacement did similar within four months. In the bin -- They bounce well when thrown from 5 mtrs away and miss the wheelie bin :D

2016-01-12 01:15:00 | I have one of these, been pretty trouble free for years but in the past month several websites started to give me trouble all the time, either establishing secure connection or waiting for platform twitter etc, finally got around to resetting the router and updating the firmware, been trouble free since (although having trouble changing the security settings and the passwords), given up now but all websites now working fine. I also get the red screen when logging in, but refreshing the page and giving it a bit of time and the login box opens up ok. | Danger (287) | |
