543834 2007-04-24 06:59:00 I just bought myself an ASUS DRW-1612BL cos my cd-drive (purely that, no writing :yuck: ) was sooo slow and couldn't burn.
So, I went to burn some videos onto a DVD, but my Nero (Nero 7) does this transcoding crap. Which I take to be encoding the avi files to dvd format. OK that's all good. But why does it take so freaking long?!
For a 50 minute long clip it's taking 45 - 50 minutes. I can fit several 50 minute clips on a dvd and I have alot more dvd's to burn so this is going to take years. Can I make it go faster?
Cheers.

543835 2007-04-24 07:07:00 How much RAM have you got on your machine?
Generally it takes a while because it has to go through each frame of the video clip. For anything to do with video, the more RAM you have the faster things will happen. I transcoded a music DVD for my iPod last night and it took about 1 1/2 hours with 1GB of RAM on my iMac. The music DVD was 1h 45m long.

543836 2007-04-24 07:16:00 As a general rule of thumb using nero for transcoding it will take almost as long to transcode as the length of the video. radium (8645)
543837 2007-04-24 07:20:00 I've got 512mb of ram.
Radium, that's a bit depressing. Oh well i'll just have to bite the bullet and do it.

543838 2007-04-24 07:22:00 It may also depend on the speed of the CPU. Whats the CPU? Speedy Gonzales (78)

Set up the DVD for transcoding then go and cook yourself some dinner and it might be done when you com back. The other option is to set your PC to do it either over night or when you leave for work in the morning.

543840 2007-04-24 07:54:00 If your burning them for a standalone DVD Player You could buy a DVD Player with DivX Playback. It will play your .avi files.

I have one and it's one of the best things I have ever brought.

543841 2007-04-24 08:00:00 any video editing is going to take time. its a lot of data to convert. my old pc (1.4ghz atho) used to take 8 hours to encode the video (dvd to divx).

if it takes to long buy a faster pc ;)

I've got one. But how do I tell nero not to transcode the .avi files. This sounds promising :)

 and more RAM, especially if you decide to take it further and want to ad a bit of creativity to your career.
I am currently compiling and editing a home movie. I went out tonight and got a DV Firewire cable so that I can finally import the footage that has been sitting on my Sony DV camera for the past 3 years and turn it into a road trip come ski/snow board movie with some decent sound tracks added to the time line.
