543309 2007-04-22 11:46:00 In the ongoing saga that is my now three month old HP Pavilion A1555A (freezing for no apparent reason when connected to the Internet and downloading files, or just general surfing), I have been able to ascertain through trial and error (lots of them!!:D ) that my issue is related to a driver problem .

Since the problem only ever occurs when I am connected to the Interweb, I have concluded that the issue most likely lies in the modem software (especially since using 'ordinary 56K dialup', there is no occurrence of the problem) .

After describing my problem in an email to Woosh support, I have had a response (impressively quick too!) from them, who advise "I believe your computers CPU may have a 'Hyper Threading' option, and this may be enabled . Hyper Threading causes issues with our modem drivers, and we recommend this be disabled in the computers BIOS . "

I am more than happy to take this advice onboard and disable it if it will make a difference and make the Interweb usable again - after two + months of not really being able to use the machine online, and getting constant grief from Mrs johcar and the kids!!

Can anyone advise what I should be looking for in the BIOS? I can't see anything that specifically states "Hyperthreading: On/Off" . . .

Also, can anyone advise whether switching off Hyper Threading will make any material difference to my running of XP Media Edition, SP2 and the various software installed thereon?

Thanks in advance . . .

543310 2007-04-22 11:57:00 Your CPU does not have hyper threading.

That aside, Have you disabled every single item in startup, plus all Non-MS services and taken note if the issue goes away?

543311 2007-04-22 12:47:00 I have Woosh and I have Hyper-Threading in this computer and its fine I believe. Any enabling or disabling of hyper-threading would be done in the BIOS setup if you do have it. beeswax34 (63)

Hyperthreading should not cause any problems on any software even if it did support it.

543315 2007-04-22 20:13:00 From your post I am guessing youre using an adsl modem, and connecting via usb?
Can you connect via ethernet cable?
Tried another usb cable, or using a different usb port?
Even reinstall the mobo drivers?

543316 2007-04-22 21:16:00 Now this may be drastic but in my opinion the best may to target the problem would be to do a full recovery of your system (after you've backed up of course) and then see if your system plays up like before. I would also make use of the ethernet connection rather than the USB connection.

Cheers

Get an ethernet connection then there aren't any driver issues.

WHy do helpdesks do this? They must have a vote and pick some technical sounding load of crap to then feed back to the customer.

I got the same crap from Wirelss Nation.
Had an issue being unable to run the dish calibration software, error 7 which no-one knows what that is. Ran the older version and got nowhere with the results.

They told me it was A)My firewall (bollocks) B)hadn't set my laptop date back a month
Ipstar tells me its most likely a faulty receiver.

Funny, I'd figured there must be some fault too.

Anothet time, customer had lost connection for a short time, WN tells me its because the modem went into sleep mode,
Ipstar told me they had a rain fade issue.
