543244 2007-04-22 11:15:00 Hi all

Just came back and turned on the computer but it only got up to the part where it says windows is loading with a blue background. It then comes onto the login screen and asks me to choose the user I wish to login as. Theres only one (my one) and I click on it and it asks me for a password. This is where it gets weird because I never had a password in the first place. As soon as I turned the computer on, it would go straight to desktop and I would start using the computer.

I tried putting in admin and default as the passwords but then it says the log on at OEM- and then a bunch of number cannot be found and then when you click OK it goes straight back to where I'm supposed to enter my password. Please help me get back in as I have no backups of my work (serves me right I guess) and I have exams coming up.

Thanks:help:

543245 2007-04-22 11:42:00 Have you tried booting it in safe mode? winmacguy (3367)
543246 2007-04-22 11:42:00 While you want for someone who may have an idea on how to fix this, here is a way to backup your data just in case.

If you have a DVD / CD drive in the computer I would get a Linux live boot CD & use that to get the data

Have a look at this thread on what Linux live boot CD to use:

You’re using XP right?

Have you made any changes to your computer over the last few days like installed any new programs etc..?

543247 2007-04-22 12:00:00 I booted in with Safe Mode, backed up all my data so its ok there. I changed all the passwords to nothing so all I would have to do is just press enter when it got to that screen. Tried that and all it says is that this log on at OEM-********** cannot be found. Both accounts, admin and my one (I always used my one) are there because I can see them in Safe mode.

Could my boot.ini be damaged. I did install SpyCatcher in the last couple of days and re-installed FF and Adobe Acrobat 8. Thats about it- Using XP Home.

543248 2007-04-22 12:40:00 Thanks everyone. It was SpyCatcher. As soon as I uninstalled it and restarted the computer, it was OK. I'll be having a wee word with PC World USA for recommending such a program. beeswax34 (63)
