543329 2007-04-22 23:09:00 That's funny - the image I have of Metla is one of tattoos rather than sleeves... :D :D :D

Cheers guys - the router isn't as high on the list as getting the interweb connection fixed.

Metla, if you have a multiport router brand you can recommend, I would be more than happy to take your advice!

543330 2007-04-22 23:15:00 I have a liking for the Billion brand, Though last time I looked there range available in NZ didn't include a gigabit model.

Though this is only needed if both systems on the network have a gigabit capable network adaptor in them.

That aside, The DSE gear maybe perfect for your intended use.

543331 2007-04-23 01:15:00 Interesting - just had a phone call from Woosh (as a follow up to my response that my PC was NOT Hyper Threading capable) . Now they advise that it's the Pentium D chip that is the problem . :waughh:

Either way, they are sending me a FREE ethernet connector for the modem!!

So I guess all I have to think about now is the networking at home with the laptop (assuming the ethernet connector solves my problems, of course) .

Is a wireless router capable of taking both the connection from the PC and the Woosh modem? In other words, does a wireless router have more than the single port that connects it to the PC?

Or will I still have to buy a multiport router in addition to a wireless one?

543332 2007-04-23 01:31:00 Be careful when you go out to buy a router, as a lot of the routers sold in NZ contain a DSL modem. Want you want to look for is a broadband router, i'd also advise you to avoid shopping at DSE for such a unit and consider an online retailer such as Ascent.

I would highly recommend the Linksys WRT54G or the WRT54GL. Both units are nearly identical except the WRT54GL can use modified open source firmware. Both have a 4 port switch, router and wireless AP.

Either way stick to name brands such as Linksys, Netgear or D-link, and if Metla recommends Billion then they're probably worth considering too ;)

543333 2007-04-23 01:40:00 Thanks Pete - Ascent is usually my first choice when buying 'proper' gear. DSE are OK for odds and ends...

The Linksys WRT54G - does it meet my requirement to be able not only to plug it into the PC but also to plug in my Woosh modem to it?

Assuming the Woosh modem can use Ethernet then the WRT54G will be perfect . I have not experience with Woosh so i can't say for sure, but seeing as Woosh themselves are sending out an ethernet connection kit then i dont see why the modem wouldn't support it .

The Woosh modem is designed to merely provide internet to one PC, whereas the router is designed to take the internet connection provided by the modem and share it to many PC's . The WRT54G and many other broadband routers have a 4 port switch, this allows you to connect up to 4 PC's (you can add more by adding an extra switch but thats more than you need to know) all of which will be provided internet via the router .

I'm guessing by the description of your current situation that your running a crossover cable between your laptop and desktop using ICS(Internet Connection Sharing) to share your broadband internet . The router essentially takes over the job the desktop was doing in sharing the internet .

543335 2007-04-23 02:33:00 Cheers - looks like the WRT54G will indeed be perfect . $199 at DSE and $182 . 64 at Ascent . Or $120 at Acquire!! Checked out the boxed unit at DSE at lunchtime . Looks like the bees knees!

I actually have the Woosh PC card for the laptop (far cheaper to run than the Telecom or Vodaphone equivalent at $55 a month for 20GB - OK the speed isn't as flash as the big boys hardware . . . but it does the job . And I get both the PC and the laptop on the same account - shhh!) - the crossover cable network with the PC was primarily for LAN gaming and printing .

Thanks for your help - looking forward to getting my wee package from Woosh and hopefully resolve my (and my kid's) woes, once and for all!!

But let's not kid ourselves - as soon as that's fixed, there'll be something else that "needs fixing" :waughh:

And maybe, sometime in the next couple of months, a response from the HP HelpDesk :p

543336 2007-04-23 03:23:00 Hold up a minute, if you've got the PC card then I doubt it will work with that router. In all likelihood you'll need a router with a PCMCIA slot, what exactly is Woosh sending out for free? So you don't have the Woosh USB modem? Pete O'Neil (6584)
543337 2007-04-23 03:36:00 's OK - I have the modem for the PC and the PC Card for the lappie. Ethernet cable is for the PC/modem... :) johcar (6283)
543338 2007-04-28 09:37:00 UPDATE: Thanks to eveyone who contributed their wisdom to this thread. I received the ethernet cable connector from Woosh this morning, installed it and everything has been working beautifully since. No instances of the PC freezing while online.

So, with luck, I won't have to go all grumpy at Harvey Normans/HP/Woosh about the lack of usability of the PC.

Until something else breaks... :D

Cheers everyone!!
