2007-04-22 21:33:00 | Now this may be drastic but in my opinion the best may to target the problem would be to do a full recovery of your system (after you've backed up of course) and then see if your system plays up like before. I would also make use of the ethernet connection rather than the USB connection. CheersThis has been done - with the exception of using an ethernet connection...

2007-04-22 21:37:00 | Get an ethernet connection then there aren't any driver issues. WHy do helpdesks do this? They must have a vote and pick some technical sounding load of crap to then feed back to the customer. I got the same crap from Wirelss Nation. Had an issue being unable to run the dish calibration software, error 7 which no-one knows what that is. Ran the older version and got nowhere with the results. They told me it was A)My firewall (bollocks) B)hadn't set my laptop date back a month Ipstar tells me its most likely a faulty receiver. Funny, I'd figured there must be some fault too. Anothet time, customer had lost connection for a short time, WN tells me its because the modem went into sleep mode, Ipstar told me they had a rain fade issue. If I use an ethernet connection, this would then prevent me from connecting my laptop directly to the PC wouldn't it? I play LAN games with my son occasionally and also use the PC printer to print files from my laptop.... I could use a USB drive to facilitate the printing, or even plug the printer directly into the lappie I suppose, but nothing is sounding particularly simple - and it SHOULD be!! What would the options be for network (cabled) connections if I was using the ethernet port/cable for the modem? Would I need to buy a hub as well?

2007-04-22 21:39:00 | Here's the text of the support email I have sent to Woosh (and HP): "In January this year, I purchased an HP Pavilion A1555A from Harvey Norman Wairau Park, Auckland . When I set up the machine at home I followed the instructions and created the Restore Disks recommended . I then proceeded to install software: ZoneAlarm 6 . 5, Microsoft Intellimouse 5 . 2, Woosh and Office 2003 software to begin with . Once installed, I used Windows Update / Microsoft Update to download and install the latest patches and upgrades . This is when I experienced my first issue of what is an ongoing, very annoying, problem . When connected to the Internet via the Woosh modem, the PC screen would “freeze” . No Ctrl + Alt + Delete made any difference, leaving it alone for several hours also made no difference . The only way to get around the problem was to turn it off and reboot . Only to have the same thing happen the next time I connected . I took the machine back to Harvey Normans and left it with them to troubleshoot . As I expected, I got a call a few days later saying they had been unsuccessful in locating the problem and could they ‘reset the machine to factory settings’ . I reluctantly agreed, doubting that this would resolve anything (later proved correct) . When I picked the machine up, I once again returned home and repeated the installation process described above . Almost immediately the machine froze up again when I connected to the Internet using the Woosh modem . I immediately returned to the shop with the PC . They then attempted to replicate the issue by connecting (via 56K dial-up – different modem driver) and started to download Microsoft Updates . Although the connection was slow, there was no repeat of the issue . I took the machine home again, and reattempted downloads . Freeze . This time I left it for a while before rebooting . When I rebooted a message popped up stating “Windows has recovered from a serious error” and prompted me to send the . dmp file to Microsoft . Once this had been completed I was directed to a MS error page which suggested what I already suspected . The page stated that I had experienced a BSOD (although this was not true - the screen had frozen with whatever I was doing at the time . I did not see a BSOD . Perhaps if I had, this would assist me in troubleshooting this issue . ) and a serious driver error had occurred – of course, they had no further information that would enable me to resolve the issue! There is nothing in the Event Viewer corresponding to the time of the crash . The fact that the problem does not appear to occur on a dial-up connection but does when I use Woosh (for downloads or games – but not consistently) suggests to me that there is a conflict somewhere with the modem drivers . I now have Automatic Updates turned “On” with the setting to download and install automatically – this does not seem to cause any issues . But trying to load a webpage or download a file or play an online game is a problem . The non-HP software I have installed is the same software as I had installed on the previous PC (a “no-name” brand – TMC originally assembled it in 2000, new motherboard a couple of years ago) . The old PC had no such issues . The only thing that is different is the machine itself . By process of elimination, this leads me to the conclusion that something pre-installed by HP is conflicting with my choice of software, with a 99% chance that it is modem driver related . Since a PC these days is pretty much a waste of space if it has no usable Internet connection, I am not getting my money’s worth out of this deal . Help please!!??"

2007-04-22 21:39:00 | Using the Woosh supplied modem (size of an IPaq) connected via USB - had no issues with this on the old PC, so expected no issues on the new one... I referred to this practise in a earlier post as boiling water with your toaster, and liked it so much I have repeated it:lol:. Ditch USB. I would be very surprised if doing so didn't clear up the issue.

2007-04-22 21:47:00 | Cheers guys (and gals). Looks like the next step is to visit DSE at lunchtime and get myself an ethernet connector and a multiport router (with some cable). At this point the extra expense is probably cost-and-grief-justified!! :) | johcar (6283) | |
2007-04-22 21:58:00 | um....I would recommend shopping elsewhere for a router, That maybe unjustified, but I am yet to see a DSE sourced router that I didn't hate. | Metla (12) | |
2007-04-22 22:44:00 | I have to disagree, not only did I buy from DSE I brought a DSE branded product, the setup was the easiest and pain-free I have ever seen and I have never had a problem with either piece of hardware in 2 years and counting. | DeSade (984) | |
2007-04-22 22:49:00 | Feel free to disagree:D Just out of interest, How many routers have you set up?, Multiple brands?, Multiple configurations? Thats not to say the DSE gear is crap, Just that I don't like them (and have had to send people back multiple times to return their gear to DSE and get something that doesn't suck) I may be biased, But at least I wear it on my sleeve.....

2007-04-22 23:06:00 | I am sure I have not dealt with nearly as many as you, probably done 10 or so myself with only 2 or 3 configurations, I am sure your much more of a expert than I am but we can only comment on our individual experience can't we :) | DeSade (984) | |
