544375 2007-04-26 03:24:00 Hi i seem to hav run into a problem i cant solve and was seeking advice. I live wit my parents on a fairly average sized property. I live in a sleepout which has a shared phone line with the main house. I have been workin so in November of last year i got xtra broadband, which was good, then the phone line kinda stopped working in the sleepout (as in i couldnt keep a broadband connection) so i went and brought a 30m network cable, hooked the xtra router to the line in my parents room (closest with a phoneline) and slung the cable out their window and across the lawn to my sleepout. This has been okay until my parents wanted to share my broadband (as they were still on dialup) so i am tryin to figure out if i can do this, as the pc my parents use is near the front of the house, i hav a wireless router (Netgear WGR614 v6) but i cant get a signal from the sleepout. it is a wireless G router and i hav the matching card recommeded for it
I dont really want to move my pcs, inside, anyone got an affordable solutions? i hope that is enough info and makes sense

Thanks

544377 2007-04-26 03:33:00 Set your parents up for wireless and keep the cable for yourself.
Set the AP up in their bedroom and ig its a average house they should get a signal from the front without a problem.

544378 2007-04-26 03:35:00 Could you use that 30M network cable to get the wireless router any closer to the sleepout?

You could possibly get another cheap accesspoint or wireless router and place that at the other end of the house to expand the range...

How far away from your room PC is your parents PC?

hmmm i can get the 30m cable frm my pc, to the room in which their pc is in,but the cable is so taunt and i have to go thru a bathroom to get it there....it would be bout 35 or so metres i'd say

544381 2007-04-26 05:02:00 Sounds like the wireless is fubr, you should get some signal.
Have you tested the wireless with the computer next to it, is there any signal at all?

544382 2007-04-26 05:32:00 yea i can get a signal sittin next to the router, its really weird aidanmaz (7180)
544383 2007-04-26 06:20:00 the simplest solution is to by a cheap 5 or 8 port 100M switch and plug both computers and the router into it - no wireless issues and better speeds, plus you can network the pcs if you wish. You can pick these up for under $30 brand new.

If all you want is internet even an old 10m hub would do the job, and is worth basically nothing if you can find one.

for serious network a gig switch would be nice - won't help the internet one little bit but sure speeds up file transfers between pc's

544384 2007-04-26 06:24:00 oh by the way - ethernet patchcords are not weatherproof and will eventually break down from exposure to UV, rain etc. It's ok as a temporary solution but if you wanted a more permanent one dig a trench and use some 20mm waste pipe to make a waterproof duct - or you can by waterproof cable and use that. dugimodo (138)
