544271 2007-04-25 08:56:00 We have a computer here, one morning we tried to log on. The computer will reach the windows login screen and the mouse is able to move, BUT it won't click on any of the options/accounts - THEN after a few minutes or seconds the mouse freezes completely and a single discontinuous beep is heard from the motherboard.

We tried different mice, key boards, PS slots and USB slots. To no effect.

We looked up single beep - apparently this is to do with the ram of which we have 1gb of.

We took both ram sticks out, put one in the other slot and tried - failure
then put it on its own in the other - failure.

The other stick worked fine in the one it wasn't in originally.

We logged in and backed everything up.

We were on 1x512 stick now.

We thought we'd try again, turned it all off and tried the sticks again this time NOTHING worked in any slot, it just boots and freezes at the login screen after not being able to click on anything.

We then took another stick of ram from MY computer - a 512 stick - and tried it in both slots - some problem - tried again with a 256 stick.

The original ram don't produce this problem in my computer and now show up in my system specs as 1.75gb of ram (1x 256 1x512 plus the 2x512 from the other computer.

So it seems to me something must've happened to the motherboard.

Any ideas?

I can't follow that.
A discontinuous beep? Meaning a single short beep??? Not one that is ongoing?

So one piece of ram worked and the other didn't. OK, one is good and the other bad.

Your RAM may not be comaptible with this other PC.
What brand and type and how many chips on each side are all these different pieces?

544274 2007-04-26 09:54:00 One piece of the ram that was always in the computer worked on its own in the other ram slot, but upon taking it out it now doesn't work in any - but it does work in my computer.

The ram is compatible with my computer.

And a discontinuous beep - yes a single short beep.

Maybe the ram works fine and the problem is elsewhere? But that's what I've been told a short single beep meant - ram problems.

I'm guessing it's to do with the ram slots themselves and not the ram.
