544854 2007-04-28 01:11:00 Since buying a laptop a month ago, i hav not really used my desktop machine, i installed a server OS but this seems to be a waste of computer
It has:
P4 3.0Ghz HT
1GB ram
256MB vid card
2 x 160gb, and a 200gb hdd
DVD +/-RW DL writer

that to mesounds like a waste for a hme user server, but i dont really know what to do with it. Any ideas?

Cheers

I am sure that Jen and plenty of other people on PF1 could help you get into Linux.

544858 2007-04-28 02:06:00 The point was not so much that it was Linux, more the fact that you could make an ftp server, maybe throw in apache, and learn that and mysql ... Myth (110)
544859 2007-04-28 05:43:00 Have you considered Windows Home Server, with all that harddrive space its could be an ideal way to serve media to your local network. The same thing could easily be done with Linux as Myth has suggested but if your not comfortable in the Linux environment then WHS may be a better option.

Otherwise you could install a media frontend over Windows or Linux such as MythTV and use it as a media pc. Couple that with a home made IR receiver and a generic remote and it could be quite a fun project.

I don't think you would be here every 5 minutes for ever. Only while you got the system up and running and were going through the initial learning curve. I would say that it would be well worth while setting up a Linux home server.(even though I don't have one myself)
