544795 2007-04-27 23:33:00 Could we have a sensible debate about broardband speed without people pushing their own ISP barrow.
What I would like to know is.
Why the peak on my ISP is from 10am to 2am.What affects this peak time ie use of the net by who in what country.
What affects my speed other than copper wires and other traffic.
Would it make a difference to my speed if someone in my area on another ISP but on the
same copperline setup from the box up the road was playing a game.
Is it any use at all complaining when I am getting 7.5 Kbs at times.
AND most of all how on earth can I tell if it is a passing problem or something I should complain about.
Also what is generally the best time in NZ to download and get good speed and also does it matter a lot which country one is downloading from.

544796 2007-04-28 01:06:00 Why the peak on my ISP is from 10am to 2am.What affects this peak time ie use of the net by who in what country. Most businesses use the net from around 9.00 on. Possibly schools as well (havent been in years so I don't know how many of them have computers for student use)

AND most of all how on earth can I tell if it is a passing problem or something I should complain about.I would definitely inform your ISP if I were you. I had a similar issue and informed my ISP, took a few weeks but problem has gone (I at least get 100+ even during peak now)

Also what is generally the best time in NZ to download and get good speed and also does it matter a lot which country one is downloading from.IN the mornings I find is best (6am till 10)

I am generally on from about 3.30am and it is not any different.
Really do the providers take any notice ????

544799 2007-04-28 01:49:00 I hesitate to ask,but is it any better with Xtra, after all they have the lines and most of the stuff that it takes to deliver which the other ISPs have to use.On the same subject,
can any ISP deliver "better service" or are they all the same ?Also I would have thought that at 3.30 am there would be very little NZ traffic.

544800 2007-04-28 02:20:00 I take it you actually mean 7.5kBytes/sec, not 7.5kbits/sec.

It would be useful if you could post the connection speed reported by your router/modem, together with line attenuation and signal to noise (noise margin) figures.

544801 2007-04-28 02:56:00 Here's a tool that you can use to you can keep an eye out for your speed:
www.jetstreamgames

Some times I get really low (ie < 100 kbps) and some time extreme max. Not consistant.

I recently swtich from xtra to Orcon but I get billed extra for downloading more sutff!! I have to look into other 'plans' that can allow me some sort of unlimited download.

The equipment in the exchange by you.
Your phone lines in the house.

Hell no.

Do regular speed tests.

I just turned my router off for a min or 2 and have gone from 7.5 KB/sec
to 340 KB/sec so I guess the router is my problem.
