544546 2007-04-26 21:19:00 hi

i have one of those cheapo brother printers (MFC215C) that has the individual ink tanks. The only issue is that it always tells me to change the ink and stops printing which is fine but when i do change the tank it always appears that there is a good 10 to 15% remaining in the tank.

Is there a way of getting the printer to use the tanks until they are dry or do i need to try and bleed them and make a full tank from lots of little left overs ?

cheers

544547 2007-04-26 21:33:00 I don't think there's any way around that. You will just have to replace as and when required. As for using multiple empty tanks to make a full one... I wouldn't do that either. You may find yourself without a printer at all if anything goes wrong.

544548 2007-04-26 21:38:00 Same printer as me. Try the firmware update from the Brother (www.brother.co.nz)
site.

Click on drivers and software, select firmware, select your operating system,
select the language, then search.

Click on information, then click on download.

Once you've downloaded it, (Java needs to be installed).

Run this file, make sure the printer is plugged in and on. And wait for it to check for updates, DONT TURN THE PRINTER OFF.

The latest version of the firmware fixes:

How to verify your firmware version:

1. Press the "*" and "#" buttons simultaneously.
2. The firmware version is displayed on the on upper left corner of the LCD panel.
3. The letter showing in the first or second location from the left represents the firmware version of the unit.

Firmware updated: 21/07/2006

544549 2007-04-27 00:18:00 The reason that you cannot use every last drop of ink is because if you did the print head in the printer would run dry and burn out the actual print head. This would cost heaps to get fixed. I have the 210 model and have been refilling my tanks while still in the machine. Of course you need to drill out a refill hole before the initial refill and plug it up after you have refilled it. Some of the refill kits come with the plug or you can make a plug out of Blutack which works fine.
Of course there are those that will tell you that you invalidate the warranty. I have been doing this for years with an old Canon 3000 and my 210.
Good luck!

544550 2007-04-27 00:32:00 It does invalidate the warrranty, in my last job we denied many for this reason.

Its doubtful that the ink had anything to do with the warranty claim, just a good excuse to use to deny the claim.

Although if the machine is out of warranty then go for it, nothing to lose.

Totally understand but the volume of ink left in is bordering on criminal !!!

544552 2007-04-27 00:49:00 I know the Epsons do this too..and I bought a chip-resetter device to tell the printer that the tank is full...but only after I refill them, of course.

Didn't think of the burn out problem for the nozzles...gotta ruminate on that a while.

544554 2007-04-27 01:14:00 I didnt know u could update it with firmware, when I brought it.

Until, I went to the brother site.

And didnt wait for the ink cartridges, to get low enough to find out (I updated the firmware a week or so, after i brought the printer).

That policy would not stand up under challenge. It might be fair enough for ink-related faults (however specious the underlying argument might be) but not for any other fault.

Of course some people might keep a set of genuine cartridges after they had 'run out' especially for "warranty insurance" purposes and pop them back in before returning the printer for service.
