545283 2007-04-29 14:38:00 My PC is telling me my D drive is not formatted, and yet I know it is. The problem started when I restarted my computer yesterday, the hard drive was working fine, and as far as I can tell, it's not a hardware issue.

The hard drive in question is a 160gb Maxtor ATA drive set as slave, my C drive is working fine, and my 250gb SATA drive is fine too. I don't want to format, as the drive is almost full of data.

No clue what to do about it, so I thought I'd ask here.
Cheers for any help.

545284 2007-04-29 20:58:00 Slave it in another PC to check it.
I'd say its died.

545285 2007-04-29 20:59:00 Sounds like it could be dying... it is a Maxtor you know :p

Try it in another PC and see if that can see the data, also try a partition explorer like Paragon Partiton Manager (www.partition-manager.com)

Also try running the Maxtor hard disk utility, I am not sure on the name of it though...

545286 2007-04-29 21:40:00 Cheers for the advice, I tried the partition manager program, and it confirms what I said, the drive is ok, it's just saying that it's not formatted.

Also, I don't have another tower here, only a couple of laptops.

Got anything else ? I really don't want to format.

545287 2007-04-29 23:41:00 OK, what does the Maxtor test say? well Seagate now... (here (www.seagate.com ))

EDIT: are you able to copy the data off of the drive using the Partition Explorer onto somewhere else ASAP? cause you could loose the data if the drive is going...

EDIT x2: Just because the Partition Explorer can see that data does NOT mean the drive is OK, it means that you should still be able to get the data off

545288 2007-04-30 00:31:00 Well, I can't install the Seagate tools (Error 1324. The folder path "C Drive Stuff" contains an invalid character) the folder it's talking about is one on the drive I can't access.

And the partition explorer doesn't let me see any data, it just shows that the drive is there and is unformatted. However, this is the problem, it IS formatted and has around 150 gb of data on it.

545289 2007-04-30 07:19:00 You burn Seatools to CD and boot from it... read the documantation.

Oh, I misread, I thought you could see the data... Hmm, looks like the data might be gone... unless it is REALLY important and needs to be taken to a data recovery specialist, and they cost SHED LOADS...

Its dead. Get another Seagate, more reliable.

545291 2007-04-30 08:23:00 NO!
Dont pay no bugga!
If the drive is ok, and you havent been dicking with your OS I dont see why you should pay some bugga any dosh...
Change cables etc...? Restore OS...?
Tried every free drive tool on the market? Keep trying.

I blew a harddrive board a couple of years back and was told by EVERYONE to throw it or pay NZD1200 to recover it.
I did it for $120.. bought a new drive that matched the model exactly (timing wise too) and used my screw driver and fixed it myself.
Still working and I have a spare hard drive waiting.
Even MAXTOR said I couldnt' swap the drive board... BUT I DID.

Hero worshipping begins here....=> :)

And I said if the data is THAT important then get it professionally recovered. I have tried a lot of the free recovery tools and found that Paragon Partiton Explorer is the best, but I have never tried on a drive that is showing up as not formatted.

And do you feel special, want a medal? well you are not going to get one from me! and who would worship you? :groan:
