| 545175 | 2007-04-29 06:01:00 | I have been asked to price and possibly build a computer for a friend of my g/f's. This is to be a computer for a small business with some internet capabilities. No gaming will be done on the computer. This is what I intend to propose and was wanting to make sure there would be no hardware issues I may have overlooked (whilst this is not the first computer I have built, it is the first one where I have had to source parts... all parts sourced from Ascent). Here is the parts list: CPU: Celeron D 356 3.333Ghz 533 FSB; Socket 775 Mobo: Asus P5VD2-MX 1066 FSB DDR, DDR2 Socket 775 A-Data 2*512MB RAM DDR 400 Harddrive: Seagate ST380215A 80GB DVD/R: Asus DRW-1612BL Modem (they are currently on dialup, b/b possible soon: Generic Generic Optical Mouse Generic Keyboard Floppy (yes they want this) Altec Lansing PC Music VS4121 2.1Ch Speaker system with sub They have already sourced Monitor, case with PSU, and software is being taken care of (am selling them Genuine XP and Office discs that I have acquired and are spare to my needs) Also, are Ascent any good to deal with? Any hassles? I know this computer isnt top of the line, they aren't looking for top of the line and are wanting a reasonable yet budget-ish computer. I am looking to allow for upgrade later |

| 545176 | 2007-04-29 06:16:00 | Looks good, the only gripes I have with it... is the CELERON D :groan: I would personally get a Pentium D in that situation, but if it is against the budget then the Celly will do the job. And the HDD, for very little more you can get a higher capacity, though 80GB should be pleanty Ascent are great, it is the only place I go to :thumbs: |

| 545177 | 2007-04-29 06:42:00 | Ditch the motherboard and CPU and grab a Athlon64 X2 3600 and a mATX motherboard such as the Gigabyte GA-M61VME-S2 or Asus M2NPV-MX. While the Athlon64's arent as fast as the Core 2 Duo it'll wipe the floor with any Celeron and at around $140 its pretty awesome value! 160gb drives are hovering around the $100 mark so that might be worth considering, and 2gb of memory isn't that expensive anymore. Make sure the PSU they have already acquired is of a decent quality, if its not the Silverstone ST405 is an awesome buy at around $80. Also maybe consider spending some money on a semi decent keyboard and mouse as they are normally more comfortable etc Ascent are very highly regarded but are expensive, Computer Lounge and C1 Shoppingmall are also worth considering. |

That motherboard takes DDR2 I'd put a proper CPU in too. Either Intel or AMD but not a Celeron or Sempron. And a bigger drive. If you are going to build for people, you should get some suppliers. Ascent is a good shop but they certainly aren't cheap, and you could build that a LOT cheaper getting the parts wholesale. |

| 545183 | 2007-04-29 20:58:00 | Do they back their stuff up to a server, because if so they would only need a max 40GB HD for their desktop and probably about 512MB RAM. I have XP Pro SP2 on Parallels with 512MB RAM and it runs just fine. 90% of offices only use Excel, Word, IE and Outlook, none of which require lots of RAM and usually only create small files. | winmacguy (3367) | ||

The usual cry is that the money's in selling service rather than hardware. Would a very small trader necessarily get much better prices from a wholesaler? |
