545118 2007-04-29 01:58:00 Hi All.
I have just been MSN-ing with a Cousin in Yorkshire (The UKs No1 county I will have you know). He is on Vigin Media, Richard Branson, which was Telewest.
He pays 20 Pounds , about NZ$67.5 a month for unlimited broadband usage on Cable. He tells me his Speed is 8GB. Soon to go up to 10GB. Trialing being done on 20GB. Whatever speed increase comes along , it is automatically passed on, Free.

Yes I realise this is the UK with a much bigger population to bring prices down. But. Does 8GB speed sound right? He assures me it is because it is on his monthly account.
Just curious. PJ

PS Can someone remind me, yet again, what the code is for thre UK Pound Sterling symbol? Something like Shift & 4 numbers on the LH keypad ?? pj

ALT + 0163. Next time you forget go into Character Map (Start > Run > type CHARMAP.EXE), choose Arial font and look for the character you require. When you click on it the keyboard shortcut will display in the bottom right corner.

545121 2007-04-29 02:10:00 I think he means 8/10 MB as I checked on the Virgin Media Broadband site.

545122 2007-04-29 02:13:00 Neither GB nor MB, those units are quantities, gigabytes and megabytes, not data rates.

He means mega bits per second; Mbps

My forebears come from the North West Riding, so I have to agree about Yorkshire :)

545123 2007-04-29 02:55:00 TeeJayR & FoxyM..... Thanks. Foxy, If I cannot remember Alt 0163, how am I ever going to remember your other instructions !!!

Terry, Doncaster, & You??

Pretty Damn fast tho. How can we get Richard Branson & Virgin Meedia over here & blow the others out of the water.

Homesick? Yeah, always am when talking to Doncaster these days. Don't think me ungrateful. NZ has been very good for me & my children & G-children. We have all had a much better life here than there. But. As one gets older.... PJ:waughh: :illogical

545124 2007-04-29 03:06:00 Branson would love to help with that, Poppa. His airline could carry the 56 million emigrants to NZ to give us the population density. He might have trouble shortening the cables to the US and Europe, so there could still be some problems. Graham L (2)
545125 2007-04-29 03:06:00 I have to agree about Yorkshire Same here.

I spent four years in Aberford (near Wetherby), and my missus' father's side came from Sherburn-in-Elmet, where I worked for a while whilst over there. A wonderful part of the world.

Yes, there’s might be fast, but I think you will find not everyone gets the full speed of it & there are times when it goes slow or it does not work .

Also I think you may find there broadband is not all that reliable, as when thing go bad, they go bad quick & for a while .

545127 2007-04-29 03:51:00 Your cousin is probably getting his Mbits mixed up with his Gbits, however it still goes to show that a country that is roughly the same size as NZ with large tracts of rural country side can have such fantastic internet speeds available with little or no data caps at reasonable prices.

The fastest ISPs in the world which are in countries such as Korea, Sweden, Holland, and Hong Kong are able to provide ethernet speeds of up to 100Mbps for home line connections. France has some pretty awesome internet speeds as well although they are a little bit less.

PJ you can also talk to your cousin on Skype which has a very good video conference capability (although it can chew up your bandwith), the international voice calling rates are pretty good.
