2007-04-29 00:55:00 I have just bought Dick Smith's version of Open Office to try out. Some years ago I downloaded this and it took over all my documents, making itself the default for everything. How can I install it without this happening? It doesn't seem to be a lot in the instructions about this. Presumably they expect you to use it as default from day one. Guerilla Surgeon (6848)
2007-04-29 00:57:00 It gives you the option to make it default for .doc, .xls ,etc during the installation snoopy (74)
2007-04-29 01:01:00 DSE dont have a 'version' of open office they just sell copies of it......you can still download it from the internet....as for it 'taking over' just LOOK carefully at what you are clicking BEFORE you clik it during the install process it'll give you the choice of makin it the default program for word/excell/powerpoint......choose as you wish........ drcspy (146)
2007-04-29 01:03:00 and had you known how it woulda been a matter of about one minute to change the file association back to 'office' rather than 'open office' for those documents it 'took over'..........all you do is left clik any file that you want to change.......then right clik it and use the 'open with' menu item.....then goto choose program.......then choose the program you want and tick the little box that says 'always use this program......'...... drcspy (146)
2007-04-29 01:07:00 Best thing about Open Office being FREE is that you can install it on as many computers in the home or office as you want to, then you just download the updates when they become available. winmacguy (3367)

Well isn't that the point of using it?
