545294 2007-04-30 16:15:00 I blew a harddrive board a couple of years back and was told by EVERYONE to throw it or pay NZD1200 to recover it.
I did it for $120.. bought a new drive that matched the model exactly (timing wise too) and used my screw driver and fixed it myself.

I considered this route, but unfortunately I'm low on cash at the moment, I still have the manufacturers warranty, so I may just send it back and just get a new drive. I wouldn't know how to go about getting the same drive as mine anyway.

I'm gonna try swapping the drive to another machine tonight and see if it makes the slightest bit of difference (don't see why it would, the rest of my hardware is fine, but worth a shot)

The most annoying part about it, is that my PC runs really slow now, so doing anything takes ages.

Cheers for the help so far guys, I'll let you know how it goes, any more suggestions in the mean time are extremely welcome.

545295 2007-04-30 16:27:00 Why don't you try the least dangerous and expensive solution: Boot your system from a Linux live cd, -uses only memory, your system remains unchanged-check your disk, copy any files that you need from it, and then -if need be-format it georgeks (9122)
545296 2007-04-30 19:38:00 I'm gonna try swapping the drive to another machine tonight and see if it makes the slightest bit of difference (don't see why it would, the rest of my hardware is fine, but worth a shot) You would be surprised, I have had a drive showing up and not formatted in one PC and then it shows up as fine (with all the data) in another PC, got all the data off and reformatted, ran Seatools, that was fine, put the data back on and it is fine now... and that was a few years ago. BTW, how do you know the reast of your hardware is fine? just because it hasn't caused a problem yet doesn't mean everything is fine ;)

Dave? if so, try this as well

Slow with this drive attached or not attached? If it isn't attached I'd be checking the rest of your PC.

545298 2007-04-30 23:23:00 1. I did have a copy of Knoppix laying around on DVD, but I lent it to my mate, and the ISO is on that drive. I will download a new copy of the CD version tonight, but I have no clue how to use it. The original reason I downloaded it was just in case of events like this.

2. I couldn't take the drive round my mates today after all, but he said it's cool for tomorrow.

3. The PC is slow with the drive attached.

Any help getting to grips with nix would be great, as I have only booted it once, and didn't really learn much.

545299 2007-05-01 03:06:00 Well I would take out the HDD while you use the PC unless you are trying to recover the data etc, cause leaving the HDD running could increase the chance of it dieing if it is dieing... The_End_Of_Reality (334)
545300 2007-05-01 04:42:00 Well, I'm booted into Knoppix at this time, and it's showing me the data, and letting me access the files, but it won't let me copy anything over to my other drive. As I said before, my Linux knowledge is extremely limited.

I know i'm going to sound stupid asking this, but could it be because the source drive is ATA but the destination drive is SATA ?

Oh, and I tried Seatools, but it just got to the Terms and Conditions and locked up.

I'm a lot happier knowing the data is all still there though. Thank god for Linux.

545301 2007-05-01 08:35:00 That is good that the data is still there :D

No, the interface will have no effect on it at all, I assume Knoppix has picked up the SATA drive?

Why won't it let you copy? what does it say?
The_End_Of_Reality (334)
545302 2007-05-01 15:54:00 Haha, I'm an idiot. It wouldn't let me copy any data because Knoppix is running from a Live CD, so it sets all the drives to read-only, I've changed it now and it seems to be copying fine. The drive won't let me write data though.

I'd be more comfortable making an image of the drive, but I have no idea how to in Linux. I'm just going to copy as much as possible to my SATA drive, and the rest to my MP4 player.

Cheers for all the help guys. :D
