544921 2007-04-28 04:49:00 Check the BIOS settings. The Ethernet device might be disabled. It might also be disabled in the Windows Hardware Manager. Graham L (2)
544922 2007-04-28 05:11:00 You do NOT have to use the Network Setup Wizard, that is absolut bull :groan:, I say stay away from it, you can configure it better manually with little effort .

You also do NOT need to install any software to get the ADSL modem working.

If you say that there are drivers for it (are they the latest), I would say take a look in the BIOS, as Graham suggested

544923 2007-04-28 05:27:00 I have used the DSL modem with two laptops without installing any software so I thought it would be the same thing for the desktop (all are running XP).

I am pretty sure there was no software that came with it anyway.

You only need to install software if it is connected via USB.

Check in your BIOS to see that the Onboard LAN is enabled, I am assuming the NIC is onboard ?

544924 2007-04-28 05:36:00 go to the command prompt & type ipconfig /all, you should see if your NIC has an address SolMiester (139)
544925 2007-04-28 05:38:00 If the NIC isn't showing up in Network Connections then its not installed. The two most logically solutions have already been suggested, either its disabled in the BIOS or the drivers aren't installed.

The whole point of connecting a modem/router via ethernet is remove the need for any drivers and the unreliability of USB.

544926 2007-04-28 07:16:00 I had the same problem the past couple of days what would happen is i plug my new dlink 502t in an nothing would happen so we looked in device manager an there was no network adaptor so we put in the mother board driver disk an installed the drivers for the chippset an others an now it works
so if you have your motherboard disk try reinstalling the drivers first it worked for me

544927 2007-04-28 07:28:00 Hi all,
Just want to say thank you all very much for the help. The remedy was to Enable the LAN controller in Bios. It was a bit hard to find (hidden in sub menus) but once enabled and rebooted the Ethernet connection started working straight away :D

Thanks again,

-John.
