| 545675 | 2007-04-30 12:21:00 | Hi all, I'm having trouble finding the perfect hardware for building my own NAS. Basically I think I'm asking too much, but just want a bit of advice as whether what I have in my mind would be easy to build, and what parts I should use etc etc. Righto, so it needs to be small... but quiet (ideally heatsinked only). I need at least 4 Sata2 ports, and obviously room for 4 3.5" hdds. I was sort of thinking microATX as miniITX doesnt really do more than 2sata ports. Although I was hoping to fit it into a shuffle sized case. See this website for sort of what I'm after except less psycho and with WAY cheaper parts: www.mashie.org Any help you can give me would be appreciated because theres just so many things to consider (I probably forgot a few) that it's doing my head in. | 545676 | 2007-04-30 14:38:00 | How much are you wanting to spend? :lol: See ere (www.snappernet.co.nz) I don't think you will fit 4 HDDs into a shuttle style case and, as you said yourself, all the micro ATX boards only have 2 SATA ports. You could always add a PCI SATA card with 2 or 4 ports on it though. |

| 545678 | 2007-04-30 23:06:00 | If you want to keep it quiet then perhaps consider the Thermalright Ultra 120, it will cool most modern CPU's passively better than the intel stock cooler. There are heaps of mATX boards with 4 SATA ports you've just got to get off your ass and look! Pair it up with a nice small case and problem solved. | Pete O'Neil (6584) | ||
| 545679 | 2007-04-30 23:43:00 | You can make an inexpensive NAS from an old PC using NASLite from http://www.serverelements.com/ It gives you the advantage of being able to add as many drives as the PC case will allow. One limitation however is that it has no security, which may be a concern in some situations. Don't get too hung up on using SATA-2 drives (except that they're about all you can buy these days) because you will never see the speed advantage on a NAS device since your data transfer speeds will be limited by the speed of the network. |
