545257 2007-04-29 11:22:00 Whats up with the internet these days?
I have an account with Xtra. I am promised "Maximum Downstream Connection Speed: Max".
In the last three months I am luck if I have ever gone over 50KB/s. Most of my downloads are between 20-30KB/s.
What is up with that?
Telecom's broadband for tha masses... Give everyone broadband, yet how many actully get what they pay for?

I got a letter from telecom saying that my line is too slow to handle high over 2.2mbps. Well for my calculations, 2.2mbps I should be getting downloads at over 250KB/s? So where are my 220KB/s?
Is it just me or is anyone else experienceing this bull****??
Are other ISPs better or what??
What are my options if I want to get a decent internet connection in this country?

Cheers
Max

545258 2007-04-29 11:35:00 Move house.

Until Telecom "unleashed broadband", I consistently got my contracted 3.2 mb/s.

After unleashing it dropped to 2 mb, still dropping and now typically 1.5 mb/s or less, sometimes much less.

Moving to another ISP will still use the same infrastructure unless you move to another connection type (wireless or cable) which have a limited footprint in NZ. Telecom appear to have oversold their capacity, the highway is getting congested and further congestion occurs at the on-ramps to the highway (the local exchanges).

The more people that connect the less there is to go around.

This appears to be a consequence of insufficient infrastructure, now unlikely to be fixed quickly due to unbundling.

545259 2007-04-29 11:38:00 Uh, line speed means that you get what your line in recognition of volume and time of day etc can give you. Just because it CAN go upto 2.2Mbps, doesnt ever guarantee that it will. It depends on your exchange, how far you are from it, how many people are on it, the quality of the line, what kind of amounts others are downloading and many other things. Everyone has this problem. Some can get it fixed, other cant.

Try switching to Xnet if you want better speeds and customer service. The prices are pretty much the same or a tad less.

545260 2007-04-29 12:33:00 KOz what Xtra plan are you on?, Go Large by any chance? stu161204 (123)
545261 2007-04-29 14:31:00 I was getting the same thing on Xtra. Moved to Orcon, speed problems dissapeared. Jams (1051)
545262 2007-04-29 21:04:00 I was getting crap speeds on Xtra...Move to Xnet and now I get over 300kb faster for upload and around 1mb faster for download.

For pretty much the same price.

545263 2007-04-29 21:56:00 Unless the ISP is doing throttling of certain ports etc, then Godfathers right.

Part of how ADSL works from what I understand is it not only gives you lower speeds the further from the exchange, but you also get lower traffic priority, usually resulting in bad speeds.

If you test http / ftp downloads and get bad results, changing ISPs rarely helps sorry.

545264 2007-04-29 22:28:00 ... what Xtra plan are you on?, Go Large by any chance?

Whatever plan you are on, it doesn't really matter! I was on 'Go Large', then switched over to Explorer (hoping that the situation will improve) but sadly, it's the same. Phoned Xtra many times and was told to do the stupid time-wasting 'Speed Test' again, which I really think that it will not yield any results. They keep on saying that Broadband speed is affected by ..... etc ... etc .. but NOT Telecom. Its exactly like when I was on Go Large - looks like I have to repeat the whole wrangling process with them and get another refund! :D But, I'm so sick of them (and I think it's no point to move to another ISP since they are getting the 'supply' from the same source!). As I mentioned about this matter in my other posts, I really suspect that Telecom just want to get as many people out of their Go Large as possible - and sadly, I fell into their trap.

Moving out of NZ probably is the only solution if one wishes to get high speed Internet (at least for another 5 years?); but are you prepared to do that? NZ is such a nice place to live in - fresh air and blue skies :)

545265 2007-04-29 22:53:00 Just move closer to the exchange ;) Im 200m from mine, connected at 7800bps and frequently get download speeds of 400KB/s+ from a single http source :D Chilling_Silence (9)

How many houses can be built within 200m radius?
