546325 2007-05-02 09:47:00 My flatmate is a torrent whore (to put it mildly) and everytime he runs Azureus my connection stuffs up completely. 80% of the time IE or firefox wont connect, or will connect at a very slow rate, msn will disconnect, I will get massive lag and disconnections while playing games, and the net will generally run like s**t. As soon as I unplug him on the router everything goes back to normal.

The thing is he has uploads limited to 10kbps and downloads at 1.5mb. Weve tried various settings but nothing seems to make a difference, as soon as he starts it up its the end for me (and all others in the flat).

Details:

max/max Orcon with interleaving off (<- maybe this could be the problem)
D-Link 4 port router

Any help would be appreciated :)

546326 2007-05-02 11:26:00 I found that MSN and web related stuff tended to play up when I used absolutely all of my bandwidth. So I just set the max speeds to around 90% of my available bandwidth and no more problems.

Not sure whether that will help or not, but it solved my problem.

546327 2007-05-02 11:32:00 Well I don't know much about networking and things, but I suggest that you do an international speed test on a torrent with PLENTY of seeds so that "full speed" can be reached, then calculate how much of that speed is his share and tell him to limit it to that - cos by the sound of it theres a chance you are maxing out your connection when he is DLing at 1.5Mbit... Make sure you do the torrent speed test during peak hours (7-11pm i spose) so that the lowest "max" value is achieved... if you get what i mean!

Yeah probably a whole bunch of garbage, but thats what I'd do.

546328 2007-05-02 15:04:00 Im not sure how to do it in Azureus, but I know that in uTorrent its relatively easy to limit the max number of Connections. That'll be whats killing your connection.

When you run the first install of uTorrent, you're asked your connection speed. Set it low, like at 256kbps! It'll auto-limit the number of connections to a lower number :)

You could also try a better modem, those D-Link ones have never been the best with torrents / large numbers of connections.. Especially the DSL-302g's!

546329 2007-05-02 18:08:00 You may limit the upload rate to 8K but remember all the other stuff has to go through as well. I have mine limited to 8 as well but if you look you will find that about 36K/sec is what is actually going thru the connection and this is what kills the response. The requests simply have no room to get out. Big John (551)
546330 2007-05-02 21:23:00 A friend of mine had the same problem with his setup.
He ran TCPOptimizer (www.speedguide.net) on the PC that is running Azureus and it fixed the problem.
May work for you as well.

546332 2007-05-03 04:32:00 Is your net connection stable while no torrents are running? I used to have this problem, torrents were as slow as heck (couldn't DL anything really...) and while the torrents were running (even only 1 torrent) the net would be unstable... It is only recently that my net connection has become a lot more stable and I can DL torrents at 50k (limited) while still able to surf the net, that is my experience... The_End_Of_Reality (334)

This best describes what is happening. Azureus can have 1 torrent going at 5kps down/1kbps up, or 4 torrents at 2mb down/30kbps up and it still doesnt make a difference. As soon as Azureus is connected on my flatmates computer the net becomes unstable. Same thing happens on the odd occasions I use Azureus on my comp.

EDIT: Last night I uninstalled Azureus and installed a simple client I used before Azureus called Bittornado. I have downloaded 2 torrents since then and have had no problems. Maybe the problem lies with Azureus????

546334 2007-05-03 06:29:00 It could be a setting in Azureus that is flooding the connection (like the number of connected seeds/peers) I personally prefer uTorrent, it is so powerful yet so tiny :D The_End_Of_Reality (334)
