545720 2007-04-30 21:48:00 yesterday i wanted to see if an old modem i had still worked so i installed it into my PC running XP pro. I wasn't too sure what drivers it need so after running a few .exe driver files it installed OK. So i uninstall it, as the PC is rebooting i hear from the speakers 'no floppy drive detected', i know my mobo (Asus A7V8X) has this talking feature but in 6 years of using it i have never turned it on or heard it??
So now when im in Windows i have no sound at all. My sound device (onboard AC97) is recognised OK in device manger, all my media players happily go about their business playing but there is no sound. I have uninstalled/reinstalled all my hardware and software in the sound options in device manger but still no luck. I have used system restore to take me before i installed the modem but nothing!!!.

any1 with any ideas

cheers

545721 2007-04-30 22:00:00 Is this modem a voice/faxmodem??

If it is, it may have been set as the default sound device.

And if it has been, obviously u wont hear sound, until u change the default device to the soundcard.

Go to control panel / sounds and audio devices / audio tab. Make sure the first and 2nd option show the soundcard thats installed.

545722 2007-04-30 22:15:00 The modem i installed/uninstalled yesterday was just a data modem, although i do have a voice/data one in their already.

Yeah, the first device is the SB Live card (onboard), the one i want to use. the second device is my USB voip phone. So the properties are set up OK.

I've been thinking of updating the BIOS, what say you?

545723 2007-04-30 22:46:00 Incidentally, if i change the output sound device (via control panel/audio devices) to the VoIP USB phone there is no audio through that either.
I have tested the phone on Skype and it works OK.

545724 2007-04-30 22:46:00 Nah, updating the BIOS if the sound is ok now, wont fix it.

Why have 2 modems installed?

Is the SB live card the actual onboard soundcard??

Or is it a PCI card? Theres a difference.

You'll have to disable the onboard soundcard, in the BIOS, if the SB live is a PCI card, and its in a PCI slot.

545725 2007-05-01 02:35:00 Cheers Speedy,

i've been a complete nincompoop for the last 24 hours (probably a lot longer ;)) i do actually have a PCI soundcard and i've been plugging it into the onboard audio, DOH! So it's now plugged in the right hole and all is OK.

by-the-way, i had 2 modems installed 'cos 1 i use for internet the other i temporarily installed to test it as someone wants it.

cheers speedy
