It always concerns me when websites suggest that you turn off UAC. It defeats the whole purpose of using Windows Vista on the basis of better security.

Agreed.

547337 2007-05-05 08:54:00 I can see UAC having it's uses in the commercial world ( Where Bill makes the bulk of his money), but it is just a pain in the bum for anyone else, there is a tool TweakUAC which gives you a silent option which is a happy medium if you really need it.

547338 2007-05-05 10:22:00 The UAC is extremely annoying. Even when turned off, it often stops me from installing and/or running many applications, in which case I can't get around it except by removing the protection altogether.

My ATItool and nVidia Control Panel are two examples. I set either one of them to automatically overclock my video card as I log in, but UAC terminates both programs from doing their jobs. And that downright pisses me off.

So it's bye-bye to UAC.

So you have a computer and you decide to run a version of Vista. Then you do not like it and you want a version of TweakUI for Vista?

I agree with the people above.
Same with XP. I had to have it, there isn't any hardware support on Win98 now.
Doesn't mean you necessarily want all the stupid new features of an O/S.

My reason for installing Vista would be for DX10, I sure don't want an O/S telling me what I can and can't do for whatever safety reasons they come up with.

Its not a matter of dictating what you can and cannot do, but rather asking for your permission before doing something which you might not agree with - for example, the auto-updater for Adobe Reader etc.

I find it quite ironic that people complain that Windows isn't secure, and yet anytime Microsoft implements security features (based on those) common in Linux systems, people seek to disable them. I find UAC nonintrusive, and in fact, has been really good at stopping "stuff" from running which I would previously have never known about.

Much of the time Vista won't even prompt you of a program trying to run. My ATItool and nVidia CP are just 2 examples that may run on startup, but is stopped by UAC. Many other programs are stopped in my case, without a prompt, which makes me clueless on how to open them, unless I remove UAC completely.

'Run as Administrator" won't work either.

As far as security goes, I was fine with XP - although some may argue it's a matter of when instead of if.

The problem with Vista's UAC is that it's far too suspicious. Microsoft could have taken some time to research common programs that people use - that way they could make UAC allow these common programs - ATItool, for example.
