546698 2007-05-04 08:26:00 Uhuh.

I've used tons of Raidmax PSUs.
Haven't had a single problem yet.

On the other hand I've had to RMA a Silverstone after 4 days. Piece of crap.

546701 2007-05-05 00:10:00 i guess it would depend how much you care, any psu is gonna work for the common user but if your a oc freak and just have to put every little bit of juice into your hardware i guess a midrange psu will fold. I brought my raidmax case with the psu included a year ago and i havnt had any problems with it, in fact id recommend it to anyone wantin to build a midrange pc. Its quiet and does the job well without gettin to hot hueybot3000 (3646)

Its more of an issue with quality and value, as a rule of thumb the better brands are more reliable and less likely to kill your PC. Granted some of the cheaper brands 90% of the time will be fine, but is it really worth taking the risk?

Exactly and a cheap PSU will not have as advanced safety features to protect the hardware compared to cheaper ones. Not for my hardware I will never let my hardware run off a cheap PSU (well OK for a short temporary time I will, but NOT permanantly)

What advanced safety features are you talking about David? I know some PSU have active PFC but from what I've read its a load of bollocks and a cheap attempt and doing what a UPS does. The main reason I buy quality brands is that they are much less likely to crap themselves and take down my PC with then.

I remember 3-4 years ago there was a post on OCNZ about a guy who's expensive PSU needed to be RMA'd so he used a 500w Hyena as a stop gap measure, within hours the Hyena had died and kill his motherboard, graphics card and two hard drive in raid. I wish i could find the thread as i may persuade a few n00bs from using a cheap PSU.

If you get a surge through the power lines then chances are even the best PSU isn't going to save your PC, theres a reason they sell surge protectors.

PFC that you mentioned, others like Voltage over run, Voltage under run, Temp over heat, over Power and short circuit etc, things like that is what I am talking about... though the cheap ones I guess are addopting these now...

Oh... that is nasty... makes me think about using any other PSU in my machine :horrified

Well I think it all depends on the size of the surge, I think that a PSU should be able to take it, but yes you are right about the surge protectors  I use them around here

546707 2007-05-05 04:36:00 If you have a $3000 . 00+ computer are you going to rely on a cheap brand psu to run all your expensive computer parts?:groan:

I would not . :D

I have a Enermax Liberty 620 watt psu,a Belkin Surgemaster, and a Liebert UPS protecting my computer-money well spent protecting the money I have allready spent on my pc .

They have saved me a couple of times with sudden power outages .
