546708 2007-05-03 12:27:00 Hi all,
I've been given a laptop to see if I can get it going. Its a Compaq Presario V2000. On power-up I get a screen for less than a second which mentions a few keys like ESC etc, then a black screen with <F1> to resume, <F2> to setup.
Pressing F1 or F2 does nothing. Pressing ESC or F2 down while booting does nothing.
The owner also said "previous to this problem, it sometimes wouldn't play DVDs. Sound would come and go *if* it did play the DVD. The computer has never been connected to the internet, so it's not malware".

What should I try next? Maybe locate a USB keyboard to plug in?
Open it up and try to find a keyboard connection? Remove CMOS battery?

Or get them to take it back to the shop (its 2 years old) and start quoting the Consumer Guarantees Act. Last time they took it in for the DVD problem, they said maybe it was Norton software causing the problem, so they disabled it. The DVD problem came back soon afterwards.

I would certainly go back to the seller with this 2 year old laptop, and ask, not demand, for their opinion. IT's an expensive item. The shop should try top make the owner happy.

They might know about a known problem with the model. If a "software" fix of the DVD problem didn't fix it, the computer should have gone back to have that repaired, anyway.

546711 2007-05-04 05:30:00 Thinking about it, a disconnected keyboard is a strong possibility, though I'd expect to see the POST complaining about a missing keyboard. The F1/F2 choice may be the "user friendly" version of that. ;) However, the cables are fragile, and there's a bit of knack to operating the connectors. I's still suggest the shop. Graham L (2)
