546608 2007-05-03 04:53:00 I have finally decided I will get broadband and after reading your threads have decided to go with xNet as they seem like the best deal. I will need to get a ADSL modem and someone mentioned you can pick them up quite cheap on TradeMe....do i need to get any particular kind? Also can i install it myself??

Also I have 4 phone jack points in my home so does that mean I will need wiring work done? I'm pretty green when it comes to broadband so if there is any other info I need please let me know, your help would be appreciated.

Thanks

546609 2007-05-03 05:39:00 Get an ethernet router modem with four ports to hook up extra PCs if you have or are likely to have more than one PC in the future . Do not get a USB modem . If there is a chance that a laptop with wireless capability may be purchased or introduced somewhere along the line then get one with a wireless access point .

Good brands are Dynalink ADSL router modems and LinkSys router modems .

Do the four phone jacks have a phone connected to each? If so you may need a full install . See this post ( . pressf1 . co . nz/showpost . php?p=498977&postcount=3" target="_blank">www . pressf1 . co . nz) for more info .

If you don't need the full install it is easy to set up the broadband yourself . You will need to plug a filter into each phone jack that is used by a phone .

This forum is full of posts on this topic so do a search if you need more information, or ask .

Stay clear of D-Link 302G, I didnt used to trust Dlink because of that product but their wireless is actually okay .

546612 2007-05-03 06:22:00 I've installed a few D-Link 604GT wireless modem units and they seem to perform Ok. Four LAN ports plus wireless all for $149 seems to be a good deal to me. supertrouper (6665)

Stay clear of D-Link 302G. I second both of those, I have a Linsys WAG54G and I have never had a problem with it

I also was initially running on a 302g and it was horribilly unstable and crashing all the time

546614 2007-05-03 06:40:00 Thanks everyone for your help. I have 2 phones connected to 2 of the phone jacks and a pc to another the 4th point I'm not using. I have a desktop and laptop and the laptop has a wireless connection. zilla (6627)
546615 2007-05-03 11:57:00 Just a tip. Connect your modem to the master jackpoint in the house for best performance. This is the main telephone jack in the house which is connected to a small box on the outside wall of house. This reduces the distance between the modem and the local exchange. Not necessary but good for troubleshooting if your broadband has speed / connection problems. Also do NOT use telephone extension cables to connect modem to phone jack. First this increases the distance the ADSL signal has to travel and second some extn cables are made from wires thinner than .4mm which degrades the ADSL signal. When you first get your modem set it up at any jackpoint you want. My first tip is only if you notice speed problems or connection drops. Mamaz (10231)

No it's not . . . My wireless D-Link (2 of them now), has been . . . . . . Well, out of commission now . . .

546617 2007-05-04 00:14:00 They do seem to have very mixed results. But mine does exactly what I need it to.

I've read of people having horrible problems with the model I have, but mine works perfect.

If I'd planned on ending up with wireless I would have just got the Linksys all in one DSL modem/router/switch from the start. Since I got just a Linksys DSL modem, I needed a router so went for a cheaper option - luckily for me the Dlink does the trick.
